RAV4 and CR-V suit families, Qashqai and Vitara are easier to use in town, CX-5 offers petrol and diesel engines that must be assessed separately, Outlander can bring seven seats or plug-in hybrid propulsion, and Forester emphasises all-wheel drive.
There is no safe choice just because the brand is Japanese. Under the same name you find very different generations, engines, gearboxes and 4x4 systems. A RAV4 Hybrid needs other tests than a diesel RAV4, a Qashqai Xtronic is not checked like a manual, and an Outlander PHEV should not be treated as a petrol SUV. Buy the specification a workshop can identify and verify, not the badge’s reputation.

The table does not describe every advert. The used market mixes cars imported from different countries, equipment that was not sold officially in Romania and wrongly completed names. Ask for the VIN before travelling and check generation, engine code, gearbox, drive, number of seats and emissions standard in the documents.
1. Toyota RAV4: three types of propulsion, three checklists
The budget mainly includes the fourth generation, produced between 2013 and 2018, but older cars or early fifth-generation examples also appear. Toyota’s official RAV4 history shows that the fourth generation had 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol engines, 2.0- and 2.2-litre diesels, and that the full-hybrid version entered the range in 2016. Do not compare these specifications only by year and mileage.
On petrol, check the cold start, documented oil consumption, cooling, leaks and the transmission. On diesel, diagnosis should include DPF, EGR, injection and the turbocharger. A diesel used a lot on short trips can reach the buyer with a loaded particulate filter even if the dashboard shows no warning light on the viewing day.
RAV4 Hybrid has a 2.5-litre engine, a full-hybrid system and can be front-wheel drive or E-Four. E-Four uses an electric motor on the rear axle, not a classic propeller shaft. The test should include the high-voltage battery, its cooling, the inverter, the 12 V battery, transitions between propulsion modes and any stored faults. 2. Nissan Qashqai: compact for town, complicated by the variety of engines and gearboxes
Qashqai can be the easiest choice to find on the list, but also one of the easiest to describe wrongly in an advert. Under the cap you find J10 and J11, plus a few J12 cars. DIG-T petrol engines, dCi diesels, manuals, Xtronic and DCT do not share the same construction or the same risks.
The official Nissan brochure for the Qashqai J11 updated in 2017 included 1.2 DIG-T and 1.6 DIG-T petrol, 1.5 dCi and 1.6 dCi, manual or Xtronic transmission, plus a 1.6 dCi 4x4 manual version. Other periods received different engines and transmissions, including 1.3 DIG-T and DCT. The engine code and VIN sheet are mandatory before you decide what to check.
On petrol, start the engine cold and check the timing drive applicable to the exact engine, oil level, cooling, misfires and the turbocharger. On diesel, read DPF loading, regenerations, EGR, injector corrections and boost pressure. On Xtronic, the test should be done cold and hot, with a slow pull-away, a slope, progressive acceleration and deceleration. On DCT, watch engagement, shudder and behaviour in slow traffic.

3. Mazda CX-5: petrol and diesel should not be put in the same category
CX-5 entered production at the end of 2011 and reached the market in 2012. The budget can cover the first generation and examples from the second, launched in 2017. The supply includes Skyactiv-G petrol and Skyactiv-D diesel, manuals or automatics, front-wheel drive and AWD.
Mazda documentation for the 2015 European range shows that the CX-5 AWD diesel was offered with a manual or automatic transmission and a 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D engine. In the same period there were also Skyactiv-G petrol versions. Do not infer the state of a diesel from the petrol version’s reputation, or the reverse.
On Skyactiv-G, check the cold start, ignition, compression if there are symptoms, cooling, leaks and the oil history. On Skyactiv-D, the inspection should be stricter: oil level and dilution, DPF regenerations, injectors, EGR, turbocharger, pressures and any historical faults. A recent oil change does not explain why the previous level rose or what regime the car had.
The automatic gearbox is tested cold and hot. On AWD, check the tyres, differentials, drive to the rear axle and leaks. 4. Honda CR-V: plenty of space, but generation completely changes the propulsion
CR-V is the family choice on the list, with a cabin and boot that are worth testing with child seats and real luggage. Under €20,000 you meet generations III and IV, and also some fifth-generation examples. The difference is not only design.
The technical history published by Honda for 30 years of CR-V shows that the fourth generation existed in Europe with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, 1.6 i-DTEC diesel and, after an update, a nine-speed automatic for certain versions. The fifth generation brought the 1.5 VTEC Turbo engine and the i-MMD full-hybrid system, and diesel left the European range.
On petrol, watch the cold start, cooling, oil, ignition and the turbocharger if the version has one. On diesel, read DPF, EGR, injectors, turbocharger and the applicable emissions system. On an automatic, identify the gearbox type before the test; not all automatic CR-Vs use the same transmission.
Real Time AWD must be confirmed from the VIN. On a lift, check the propshaft, rear differential, driveshafts, leaks and tyres. 5. Suzuki Vitara: smaller and lighter, but not automatically free of costs
Vitara suits a buyer who wants a higher seating position without the dimensions of a RAV4, CR-V or Outlander. The generation presented in 2014 and produced for Europe from 2015 is 4.175 m long. Suzuki officially announced 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, and the model’s later history includes 1.4 Boosterjet and the ALLGRIP system.
A useful detail for the buyer: this Vitara is produced at Magyar Suzuki, in Hungary. The brand’s origin does not by itself indicate the plant, the parts fitted or the quality of the example. The VIN shows the specific car; the “Japanese SUV” label describes the brand, not a guarantee of the place of manufacture or of maintenance.
On 1.6 petrol, check the cold start, oil, cooling and service history. On diesel, add DPF, EGR, injection and the turbocharger. On Boosterjet, check fuelling, ignition, turbocharger, leaks and oil-change frequency. The manual is tested on clutch, shift linkage and a slope, and the automatic in all regimes, including after warming up.
ALLGRIP is not a sufficient name for an inspection. Confirm the version, test the available modes and raise the car for transmission, differentials, driveshafts and leaks. 6. Mitsubishi Outlander: seven seats or PHEV, but not in the same car
Outlander brings more space than Qashqai or Vitara. Under the cap you find very different generations, engines and configurations: petrol, diesel and PHEV, manuals, automatics or CVT, two- or four-wheel drive and versions with a different number of seats. The title “Outlander 4x4 automatic” is not enough.
Mitsubishi confirms that the first Outlander PHEV was launched in 2013 and that it uses plug-in hybrid propulsion with two electric motors and S-AWC control in the relevant configurations. For the buyer, that means a traction battery, charging and power electronics, not just a thermal engine occasionally helped by a mild-hybrid system.
On PHEV, ask for a battery report, read differences among modules and temperatures, check cooling, the inverter, the 12 V battery and all faults. Connect the car to a compatible AC source and, if it can charge quickly, test that function too. The range shown after a charge is not a health certificate: it depends on temperature, recent routes, climate control and driving style.
On petrol or diesel, check the engine and the related emissions systems. On CVT or another automatic, ask for oil invoices and test it hot. 7. Subaru Forester: AWD standard in many configurations, with the engine at the centre of the decision
Forester is the choice for snow, slopes and roads with variable grip, but all-wheel drive does not compensate for a neglected engine or gearbox. The budget mainly includes generations III and IV, with petrol or diesel boxer engines, manuals or Lineartronic, and Symmetrical AWD.
Subaru Europe describes the fourth generation, launched in 2013, with a boxer engine, Lineartronic and AWD for the European configuration presented. Other cars on the market can have another engine or gearbox. Confirm the codes from the VIN and do not extend one version’s specifications to the whole model.
On the petrol boxer, check the documented oil level and consumption, leaks, cooling, cold start and ignition. On the diesel boxer, ask for an inspection from a workshop that knows the engine, including compression when symptoms justify it, injection, DPF, EGR, turbocharger, cooling and lubrication. An incomplete history is a reason to look for another example, not to assume that “they all do that”.
Lineartronic is tested cold and hot, in parking, on a slope, with progressive acceleration and engine braking. For AWD, check all four tyres, differentials, shafts, driveshafts and leaks. Check rust on the floor, subframes and pipes, especially on a car imported from an area with hard winters. How to choose among the seven Japanese SUVs
For town and commuting
Qashqai and Vitara are the first to measure. They are easier to park than CR-V, RAV4, Outlander or Forester. A front-wheel-drive version can be simpler and cheaper if you do not often drive on snow, slopes or unpaved roads.
For family and holidays
Compare RAV4, CR-V, CX-5 and Outlander with child seats fitted and real luggage. Outlander can offer a third row in certain versions, but it must be checked in the documents and tested for access. A large boot in the technical sheet does not say how much space remains with the seats the family uses.
For urban traffic and lower consumption
RAV4 Hybrid is the clearest direction if the battery and system pass diagnosis. Outlander PHEV makes sense if you can charge it frequently at home or at work and if electric range covers a useful part of the route. Without charging, you carry a battery and an extra system without using the main advantage.
For snow and unpaved roads
Forester starts with an AWD architecture suited to this role, and some Vitara, RAV4, CR-V, CX-5, Qashqai and Outlander cars have all-wheel drive. Confirm the exact system. On braking, tyres and speed count directly; 4x4 does not automatically shorten stopping distance.
For a maintenance budget that is easier to control
Look for a simple petrol specification with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox, if it matches your routes. Vitara 1.6, a CX-5 Skyactiv-G or a petrol CR-V can fit this logic, but only after inspection. Technical simplicity reduces the number of systems; it does not cancel wear, damage or missed services.
Inspection procedure before a deposit
- Ask for the VIN, a photo of the CIV, the registration document and invoices before you travel.
- Confirm generation, model year, engine code, gearbox, drive and number of seats.
- Check the mileage history and available events through RAR Auto-Pass, then compare it with MOT (ITP) records and external documents.
- Check recalls by VIN with the manufacturer or at a dealer; a general campaign list does not show whether the specific car was repaired.
- Ask for the engine to stay cold before the viewing and note the temperature from diagnosis.
