Kia EV2 review: a small electric car that feels surprisingly mature
The Kia EV2 is the smallest electric SUV in the Korean brand’s line-up, but it does not behave like a model built only to hit the lowest possible price. It has a well-organised cabin, an ingenious rear bench, equipment borrowed from more expensive models and two battery sizes that cover very different needs.
The base version uses a 42.2 kWh battery and promises up to 317 km WLTP; the Long Range 61 kWh variant can reach about 448–453 km depending on configuration.
In Romania, Kia EV2 starts at €26,960 incl. VAT for the Light version with the 42.2 kWh battery. The 61 kWh model starts at €33,595 in five-seat Air trim according to the price list valid from 27 April 2026.
Quick verdict: The Kia EV2 is one of the most convincing compact electric cars for city use. It is efficient, comfortable and more practical than its dimensions suggest, but the 42.2 kWh version remains best suited to urban and commuting duty. For long journeys the 61 kWh battery is the logical choice.
What is the Kia EV2?
The Kia EV2 is a B-segment electric crossover positioned below the Kia EV3. It is roughly the size of an urban SUV such as the Jeep Avenger, but uses a dedicated EV architecture and benefits from a relatively generous wheelbase.
The model measures:
- 4,060 mm length;
- 1,800 mm width;
- 1,575 mm height;
- 2,565 mm wheelbase;
- 146 mm ground clearance.
So the EV2 is compact enough for traffic and parking in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași or Brașov, but at 1.8 m wide it is not extremely narrow — worth remembering in old or tight parking bays.

Romanian technical data lists 146.5 hp for 42.2 kWh and 135.2 hp for 61 kWh. Both deliver 250 Nm from a front-mounted motor.
Exterior design: small but with personality
Visually the EV2 follows the same direction as EV3, EV5 and EV9 — vertical lights, straight surfaces and pronounced wheel arches give it the look of a larger SUV scaled down.
It is not discreet: the front is almost vertical, headlamps sit at the body extremities and the roofline stays upright enough not to sacrifice rear head room.
GT-Line adds larger wheels and sportier details, but 16-inch wheel configurations are probably better suited to Romania — likely better comfort on damaged asphalt, lower consumption and more reasonable tyre replacement cost.
For an urban EV those matter more than a slightly more aggressive look.

Interior: one of the EV2’s strengths
The cabin does not fully hide that the EV2 is an accessible model. There are hard surfaces and simple materials, but design, ergonomics and technology create the impression of a more expensive car.
The dashboard has three display zones:
- 12.3-inch digital instruments;
- 5.3-inch climate screen;
- 12.3-inch central touchscreen.
Kia keeps physical controls too — an advantage in daily use. Temperature and frequent functions should not require deep menu diving.
Multimedia offers OTA updates, Kia app connectivity and, on upper trims, Digital Key via phone or smartwatch. Equipment can include wireless charging, Harman Kardon audio, 360° cameras, ventilated seats and advanced driver aids.
It is unusual for a four-metre electric SUV to be configurable with so much kit.
Interior space and sliding rear bench
One of the EV2’s most interesting solutions is the sliding rear bench. Depending on position, you prioritise rear leg room or boot volume.
Leg room can vary between about 885 and 958 mm; boot volume between 321 and 403 litres. A 15-litre frunk helps store charging cables.
That suits young families: slide the bench rearward for child comfort during the week, forward before a holiday for luggage.
Important: Kia offers both four-seat and five-seat configurations. Check before ordering — some trims have only two individual rear seats.
How does the Kia EV2 drive?
The EV2 is not a sporty electric and does not pretend to be. Steering is light, responses predictable and suspension is tuned primarily for comfort.
The 42.2 kWh version is actually quicker than the large-battery car — about 147 hp and 250 Nm deliver 0–100 km/h in roughly 8.5–8.7 s, enough for overtakes, motorway entries and urban traffic.
The 61 kWh version has about 135 hp and 9.5 s to 100 km/h. The gap should not bother most drivers but confirms Long Range targets range, not performance.
In Normal mode throttle response is progressive. Eco and Sport change sensitivity without fundamentally altering character.
Steering communicates little; the rear uses a relatively simple torsion-beam setup. Comfort is good even on uneven surfaces and the car feels a class above its size. At motorway speeds wind noise can appear though progress stays quiet.
For Romanian roads, comfort-first tuning is probably the right choice.

Real consumption and range
How much does the 42.2 kWh Kia EV2 use?
Official Standard Range mixed consumption is about 15.1–15.5 kWh/100 km depending on wheels and equipment.
In one test at 20–23°C on a route mixing city, hills and motorway, indicated consumption was about 13 kWh/100 km — theoretical range near 325 km.
Another mixed test recorded about 14.4 kWh/100 km, implying realistic range around 290 km from 42.2 kWh.
Realistic 42.2 kWh range estimates
| Scenario | Estimated realistic range |
|---|---|
| City, warm weather | 320–380 km |
| Mixed, mild weather | 270–320 km |
| Motorway, 130 km/h | 200–240 km |
| Winter, mixed | 210–260 km |
| Winter, motorway | 170–210 km |
These are estimates, not official results. Range depends strongly on temperature, speed, wind, wheels, cabin heating and driving style.
For daily commuting, 42.2 kWh is enough. For frequent trips between Bucharest and Brașov, Constanța, Sibiu or Iași, 61 kWh is far more relaxing.
What range does the 61 kWh Kia EV2 offer?
Long Range promises up to about 448–453 km WLTP. Reasonable real-world expectations:
- 380–430 km mixed in favourable weather;
- 300–350 km on the motorway;
- 280–350 km in cold season depending on route.
That version suits households using the EV2 as their only car.
The price step over a small-battery Air is about €4,000 — justifiable for drivers who regularly leave the city.
AC and DC charging
The EV2 does not use the 800 V architecture of EV6 and EV9, but charging performance is competitive for the segment.
42.2 kWh can go 10–80% in about 29 minutes on a sufficiently powerful DC station; 61 kWh needs about 30 minutes in similar conditions.
At 11 kW AC:
- 42.2 kWh: about 4 h 05 min from 10% to 100%;
- 61 kWh: about 5 h 35 min.
Optional 22 kW AC on 61 kWh can be very useful in Romania where many public posts offer 22 kW AC.
Is fast charging enough?
Yes — about 30 minutes for 10–80% is good in this class.
Maximum power is not the whole story; sustained power matters too. For daily life, 11 or 22 kW AC at home or work may matter more than small DC differences.

Which Kia EV2 version is worth buying?
For most Romanian buyers the balanced pick is Kia EV2 Air, five seats, 61 kWh battery at €33,595 list.
It offers:
- range for interurban trips;
- five seats;
- good equipment level;
- lower cost than Earth or GT-Line;
- potential use as the main household car.
Light at €26,960 suits strict city use with home charging but four seats and smaller range limit versatility.
Air 42.2 kWh five-seat at €29,578 can be the compromise for mostly urban drivers who still want five seats.

Is the Kia EV2 good for the city?
Yes — the city is where the EV2 makes most sense.
Compact dimensions, about five-metre turning circle, light steering and good visibility simplify traffic. Instant electric response and regeneration help consumption in congestion.
Urban range on 42.2 kWh can exceed 350 km in favourable conditions — for 30–40 km daily driving that can mean charging once a week.
At 1.8 m wide it is not a Picanto substitute in the tightest bays.
Is the Kia EV2 suitable for families?
It can work well for a family with one or two children, especially five-seat versions.
Sliding bench, fairly flat floor and adjustable boot are important advantages. A folded pushchair and weekend bags should fit, especially with the bench forward.
For long holidays with two adults and two children space gets tight — Kia EV3, Renault Scenic E-Tech or Skoda Elroq are larger but more expensive.
The EV2 is an urban family car more than a four-adult, heavy-luggage SUV.
Technology and safety
Depending on trim, the EV2 can offer intelligent cruise control, lane keeping, lane centring, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, 360° view, blind-spot display in the cluster, motorway driving assistance, remote parking, OTA updates, Digital Key 2 and Vehicle-to-Load.
V2L can power external devices — laptop, portable fridge, coffee maker or camping gear.
Comfort on Romanian roads
Comfortable suspension is a major EV2 argument. It absorbs urban bumps well and does not fake a sporty character.
16-inch wheels suit damaged asphalt, tram tracks and manhole covers best; 18- or 19-inch wheels may look better but can hurt comfort and range.
146 mm ground clearance is fine for normal use but not for rough tracks — treat high kerbs and forest roads carefully.

Running costs in Romania
At 15 kWh/100 km average, energy cost per 100 km varies widely:
| Charging type | Estimated cost per 100 km |
|---|---|
| Home, 0.8 lei/kWh | about 12 lei |
| Home, 1.3 lei/kWh | about 19.5 lei |
| Public AC, 1.8 lei/kWh | about 27 lei |
| Fast DC, 2.5 lei/kWh | about 37.5 lei |
| Fast DC, 3 lei/kWh | about 45 lei |
Figures exclude charging losses (10–15% possible). Home charging — ideally with solar — maximises savings; exclusive fast-charging erodes the advantage versus an efficient hybrid.
Is the Kia EV2 worth buying?
Yes for buyers wanting a compact, comfortable, efficient EV without giving up interior space or technology.
42.2 kWh suits urban use, commuting, second car, home charging and daily distances up to 100–150 km.
61 kWh suits main-car use, regular interurban trips, families with one or two children, minimal route planning and long ownership.
At nearly €34,000, Air Long Range is not cheap but combines range, space, comfort and technology rarely seen together.
Veredicto
El Kia EV2 demuestra que un eléctrico asequible no tiene que parecer rudimentario. Distinct design, flexible interior and consumption low enough to exploit even 42.2 kWh well.
It is not the most dynamic in class, and top trims raise whether a larger model makes sense — but EV2 compensates with comfort, ergonomics and daily-use focus.
Nota: 8,5/10
Our recommendation: Kia EV2 Air, five seats, 61 kWh battery. Standard Range remains rational for city-only duty; Long Range makes the EV2 a far more complete electric.
