The short answer

A used Dacia Logan can be a sensible choice in 2026 if you want a spacious saloon with a large boot and mechanicals that are easy to understand. There is no single “reliable Logan”. Cars built from 2004 to today belong to different generations, use naturally aspirated or turbo engines, petrol, diesel or LPG, and may have a manual gearbox, a robotised Easy-R or a CVT.

For most buyers, the useful rule is this:

  • choose the generation and engine for the miles you actually drive, not for the model’s general reputation;
  • ask for the VIN before viewing and check the year, powertrain, emissions standard and recall campaigns;
  • start the car fully cold and do not accept an engine already warmed up before you arrive;
  • on LPG, check both fuel circuits, the paperwork and the tightness of the installation;
  • on diesel, buy only if you can document servicing and if your mileage justifies the emissions equipment;
  • on Easy-R or CVT, test both cold and after the car has warmed up;
  • check rust, structural repairs and wear typical of a taxi, courier or fleet car;
  • keep money back for the first service and for faults found at inspection.

An older example with invoices, a sound body and a cold engine at viewing can be a safer buy than a newer one with unexplained mileage and servicing “done at home”.

1. Identify the generation before you compare prices

Dacia presented the first Logan in 2004. Since then the name has stayed, but the car has changed substantially. Listings usually fall into three main families:

The periods are approximate, and supply differs by market and build year. A car registered in 2013 may misdescribe the engine, power or generation. Check the VIN, engine code, vehicle registration document and the certificate of conformity, if it exists.

Do not confuse a Logan III from 2021–2025 with the Logan Eco-G 120 launched later. Dacia’s 2022 technical sheet listed for the third generation SCe 65, TCe 90 manual, TCe 90 CVT and Eco-G 100 manual. The new Logan Eco-G 120 from 2026 has a 1.2-litre engine and can have a dual-clutch automatic; those figures do not transfer to a used car with Eco-G 100.

2. Logan I: body condition matters more than the engine’s reputation

The first generation is the most affordable, but in 2026 most examples are old enough that individual history dominates the choice. An 18–20-year-old car may have repaired sills, panels resprayed several times, an added LPG system, a replaced interior and mileage that is hard to reconstruct.

Put the car on a lift and check:

  1. the sills, jacking points and floor joints;
  2. the wheel arches, door edges and the area around the windscreen;
  3. the chassis rails, crossmembers and boot floor;
  4. shade differences, welds and uneven sealant;
  5. leaks from the engine, gearbox, driveshafts and cooling system;
  6. play in the steering and suspension;
  7. brake pipes, hoses and the condition of the tank.

On 1.4 and 1.6 MPI engines, simple construction does not replace history. Ask for proof of timing work for the exact engine code, check a cold start, idle, cooling, oil consumption reported by the owner and any leaks. Do not assume a belt or water pump has been changed just because the seller says the engine “never dies”.

On 1.5 dCi, a good cold start with no persistent smoke and no uneven running is only the beginning. Diagnosis should follow injector corrections, supply pressure, boost and stored faults. Check the turbocharger, intake tract, leaks and oil-change history. Emissions equipment differs by year and standard, so do not assume a particulate filter is present or absent from the wording in the advert.

3. Logan II: separate the naturally aspirated engines from TCe and diesel

The second generation brought more modern engines and equipment. Depending on year and market, Dacia offered naturally aspirated petrol engines, TCe turbos, dCi diesels and bi-fuel versions. Each needs a different test.

1.2 16V and 1.0 SCe

A naturally aspirated engine can suit town use, moderate mileage and a buyer who is not chasing strong acceleration. Check a cold start, idle stability, coils, spark plugs, leaks, cooling and proof of timing work for that engine code. On the road, watch whether the car pulls evenly and whether the clutch slips in higher gears.

Do not buy on the formula “naturally aspirated means indestructible”. A neglected engine can burn oil, have uneven compression, ignition problems or a history of overheating. A compression or cylinder-leak-down test becomes justified when starting, the exhaust or the paperwork raise questions.

0.9 TCe

The 0.9-litre turbo needs evidence of oil changes and a careful check of the intake and cooling circuits. Listen to it at first start, then repeat the test once it reaches operating temperature. Watch for misfires, warning lights, unusual smoke, hesitation under load and oil marks around the engine or the turbo tract.

A diagnosis before faults are cleared is more useful than a ten-minute impression. Ask for values and codes in a report, not only the verbal verdict “there is nothing wrong”.

1.5 dCi

Diesel makes sense for commuting and long trips, not automatically for a few kilometres around town. Check the injection system, turbocharger, EGR and, where fitted, the particulate filter. Ask the workshop to look at regeneration parameters, pressures, temperatures and faults relevant to that engine.

A recently cleaned DPF does not prove the problem has been solved. Frequent regenerations can come from injection, sensors, the thermostat, EGR or the way the car is used. The invoice should explain the diagnosis and the work, not merely contain the word “DPF”.

4. Logan III: check the real specification, electronics and warranty history

The third generation was presented in September 2020 on a new platform. Dacia announced six airbags, automatic emergency braking and eCall as standard on the range shown at the time. That information does not justify ticking every system in an advert: identify the version and test every function actually fitted to the car in front of you.

Before the test:

  • switch on the ignition and check that warning lights come on and go out normally;
  • test the screen, phone connection, steering-wheel controls and all sockets;
  • check the sensors, camera and assistance systems that are present;
  • look for signs of a windscreen replacement and ask for documents for camera calibration if it was removed;
  • compare the equipment with a Dacia specification sheet or VIN data;
  • ask for the warranty history and invoices, including software updates or LPG work.

Euro NCAP published a two-star result for Logan in 2021, derived from Sandero Stepway tests and additional data. The report shows that the passenger cell remained stable in the frontal offset impact and that AEB reacted well to other vehicles, but notes marginal protection in some areas and limits of the assistance pack. Compare cars using the full report and the protocol year, not only the star rating.

5. Factory LPG or a system fitted later

A Logan on LPG can cut fuel cost, but it must work correctly on both fuels. On Eco-G the installation is integrated from the factory, and the LPG tank occupies the spare-wheel well. On older cars you can also find aftermarket systems, with different components and paperwork.

Check in this order:

  1. start the engine cold on petrol;
  2. watch the switch to LPG without misfires, stalling or warning lights;
  3. drive enough on LPG, including under load;
  4. switch back to petrol and compare how it runs;
  5. check the filler, visible pipes, tank and the dates on the documents;
  6. ask for invoices for filters, services and any work on injectors, the vaporiser or valves;
  7. confirm that the configuration is recorded in the car’s documents;
  8. request a leak test at an authorised workshop.

6. Manual, Easy-R or CVT

Manual gearbox

On the flat and on a slope, check the bite point, slip, vibration on take-off and noises when you press the pedal. Shift every gear cold and hot. A lever that is hard to engage in one gear can have causes from the linkage and clutch through to the inside of the gearbox; do not decide the repair without inspection.

Easy-R

Dacia presented Easy-R in 2015 as a five-speed robotised manual, then paired with TCe 90. It is not a conventional automatic: the clutch and gear selection are actuated electromechanically. Shifts can therefore be more noticeable than on a torque-converter gearbox.

On the test, watch forward and reverse engagement, hill starts, slow traffic, shifts after warm-up and any dashboard warning. Strong jerks, unusual hesitation, slip or inability to select a gear need diagnosis of the clutch, actuator and adaptations. Do not buy on the promise that “it will calibrate afterwards”.

CVT

The 2022 Logan sheet confirmed the TCe 90 CVT version. Test selecting D and R, a smooth take-off, progressive acceleration, hill work and behaviour after the transmission warms up. Ask for proof of servicing according to the documentation for that VIN. Do not automatically apply an interval found for another Renault or Nissan gearbox.

7. How to tell if the Logan was a taxi or fleet car

Professional use does not automatically make the car unsellable. The problem appears when mileage, wear and servicing are not declared. On a Logan, check in particular:

  • wear on the steering wheel, pedals, gear lever and driver’s seat;
  • holes, cables or traces of mounts on the dashboard and console;
  • differences between the belts and the rear bench;
  • sticker marks, uneven paint or replaced parts;
  • repeated door closing and hinge play;
  • the floor and boot, including under the carpet;
  • dates and mileage on invoices, MOT tests and reports;
  • the number of owners and the stated use in the documents.

The RAR Auto-Pass certificate is requested with the VIN and is issued exclusively by the Romanian Automotive Register. RAR states that the document focuses on available information about vehicle history and mileage. It must be combined with invoices, network history, inspection and diagnosis; the absence of a record does not automatically prove the mileage is correct.

8. The road test: 30 minutes say more than a lap of the car park

Plan a route with bumps, slow traffic, a climb and a stretch where you can accelerate legally. The test should include:

  1. a fully cold start and a few minutes at idle;
  2. gentle and firmer pull-aways;
  3. tight turns for driveshafts and steering;
  4. progressive braking, without gripping the wheel;
  5. crossing bumps at low speed;
  6. acceleration in a higher gear for the clutch and turbo;
  7. air conditioning and heating;
  8. monitoring engine temperature;
  9. a stop, a hot restart and a new fault scan;
  10. an inspection after the test for fluids or smells that appear when hot.

Do not clear faults before they are read. Ask for an initial report and one after the test. A warning light recently switched off can leave codes, incomplete monitors or other clues useful to the mechanic.

9. What to choose by use

Town and low mileage

A naturally aspirated petrol engine can be enough if you accept the performance and find a well-maintained example. A TCe is more flexible, but oil, cooling and turbo history carry more weight. For an automatic, compare Easy-R and CVT directly; their behaviour is different.

Commuting and low cost per kilometre

Eco-G makes sense if you have convenient LPG stations and can document servicing of the installation. Calculate the saving with your prices and consumption, not only with the figures in the advert.

Long trips and high annual mileage

A 1.5 dCi can be justified when the car covers enough extra-urban miles, but a lower price at the pump does not cover a neglected injection or emissions system. The technical check needs to be broader than on an urban test.

Minimum budget

On Logan I, buy the condition, not the year or the equipment. Structural rust, a badly repaired accident and missing paperwork can quickly exceed the gap to a more expensive example. Do not spend the entire budget on the asking price.

Family and a single car

  • You have reserved budget for a service, consumables and immediate repairs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best engine for a used Dacia Logan?

There is no single engine that suits every route. Naturally aspirated petrol can work at low mileage, Eco-G for commuting with good LPG access, and dCi for long trips and high annual mileage. The condition and history of the example take priority over the theoretical choice.

Should the 0.9 TCe be avoided?

It should not be rejected on the name alone. Check a cold start, oil-change history, cooling, ignition, the turbo, faults and behaviour under load. An example without paperwork does not become safe just because it runs quietly for a few minutes.

Is a Logan 1.5 dCi worth it for town use?
