More than 10 electric models and projects are being withdrawn, paused or cancelled before 2027. The list brings together cars already on sale, such as the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, BMW i4 and Kia Niro EV, as well as projects that never reached showrooms, including the Acura RSX, Honda 0 Series and Lamborghini Lanzador.

The situation has to be read by market, however. Some decisions concern the United States only and do not mean the same model automatically disappears from Europe. For buyers in Romania, the most relevant points are the end of Tesla Model S and Model X production, the generation change BMW is preparing, and the cancellation of some global projects.

Electric models withdrawn or cancelled before 2027

Acura RSX

The Acura RSX electric SUV was cancelled before production started. The model had been shown as a prototype and was to use two motors, all-wheel drive, a double-wishbone front suspension and Brembo brakes. The decision concerns Honda’s premium brand in North America; Acura is not officially present in Romania.

BMW i4

The current BMW i4 is nearing the end of the product cycle that began in 2021. In its place, BMW has launched the new i3 based on the Neue Klasse architecture, in series production in Munich from August 2026. The manufacturer does not rule out a return of the i4 name on a future electric derivative of the 4 Series, so this is the end of the current generation, not necessarily the permanent disappearance of the badge.

For Romania, this is one of the directly relevant changes: the i4 was sold officially on the local market, and used-car buyers need to distinguish between the end of production and the end of support. Warranty, parts and service operations do not vanish with the assembly line.

BMW iX

BMW has stopped allocations for the iX in the United States, against the backdrop of the Neue Klasse family’s launch and the arrival of the new iX3. The information is not equivalent to an immediate global withdrawal. The iX has remained an important model for Europe, and availability in Romania should be checked separately in the configurator and in dealer stocks.

Chevrolet Bolt

The Chevrolet Bolt is returning for the 2027 model year, but the new production period will be short. General Motors is preparing the plant for the Buick Envision, and the Bolt is expected to leave the assembly line again during 2027. The model is not sold officially in Romania.

Honda 0 Series Sedan and SUV

Honda has stopped the American projects for the 0 Series sedan and SUV before series versions reached customers. The manufacturer cited the commercial environment and the risk of further losses. The decision should not be extended automatically to all of Honda’s electric plans in Europe, where the range and launch calendar are different.

Hyundai Ioniq 6

The regular version of the Ioniq 6 is being withdrawn by Hyundai from the US offering, after a drop in sales. The Ioniq 6 N performance variant continues. For Romanian customers, the information does not confirm a stop to European sales: the electric saloon should be followed in Hyundai’s regional offering, not through the US catalogue.

Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric has been put on a temporary pause in the United States, after Hyundai accumulated enough examples from the previous model year. The manufacturer described the measure as an interruption, not a definitive cancellation. The European model, produced in Nošovice, has a distinct commercial situation and remains relevant for Romania.

Kia EV6 GT

Kia postponed the US EV6 GT for the 2026 model year and cited changing market conditions. It has not communicated a return date. The EV6 GT should not be treated as automatically withdrawn from Europe, where the model is homologated and sold separately.

Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV is one of the existing cars leaving the US offering. The manufacturer will sell remaining stocks after dropping the electric powertrain, while hybrid variants may continue. The electric Niro also had a European presence under the e-Niro name, and used examples remain on the market even if a new version is no longer orderable.

Lamborghini Lanzador

Lamborghini has dropped the original timetable for its first fully electric model. The Lanzador concept, presented as a grand tourer with raised ride height, was to reach production towards the end of the decade. The project has been pushed beyond 2030, and company management has said current demand does not justify the investment. In the near term, Lamborghini is concentrating electrification on hybrid systems.

Sony Honda Mobility Afeela

The Afeela saloon and the associated SUV from the partnership between Sony and Honda have been stopped before commercial launch. The project was aimed primarily at the US market and involved expensive cars centred on software and digital services. Cancellation means the reservations and previously announced calendar will not materialise.

Tesla Model S and Model X

Tesla has ended production of the Model S and Model X, its first high-volume cars and the oldest names in the range. The official Model X page now states that the SUV is no longer produced and directs buyers to stocks and used cars. The Model S, launched in 2012, and the Model X, which entered production in 2015, have no directly announced successors.

In Romania, both models were available officially, but volumes were well below those of the Model 3 and Model Y. For a used Model S or Model X buyer, the important points are battery history, availability of specific parts, the cost of the air suspension and service conditions, not simply the fact that production has ended.

Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen has stopped local production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, in the United States, to free capacity for models with higher demand. The company has officially confirmed the costs associated with this decision. The ID.4 is not disappearing from Europe: Volkswagen’s plant in Emden continues to produce it, alongside the ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer. For Romania, this is the clearest example of a regional withdrawal that should not be presented as a global elimination.

Why so many electric models are disappearing

The reasons differ from brand to brand. In the United States, the removal of some tax incentives, tariffs, production costs and demand lower than initial estimates have hit low-volume projects. In other cases, a new electric platform replaces an older generation, as at BMW with Neue Klasse.

The list does not show that the electric-car market is stopping. Volkswagen continues European ID.4 production and is preparing smaller electric models, and BMW has already started production of the new i3. Rather, manufacturers are reducing overlaps, dropping projects that are too expensive and moving investment towards cars with better sales prospects.

What buyers in Romania need to know

Before interpreting an announcement about a model’s withdrawal, it is necessary to check whether the decision is global, European or exclusively American. In the case of the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV6 GT and Volkswagen ID.4, the situation in the United States does not describe the offering in Romania.

The end of production can reduce resale value more quickly, but it can also bring discounts on cars in stock. The contractual warranty remains valid, and the manufacturer still has obligations regarding parts and repairs. On a used electric car, battery condition, charging history, software updates and access to an authorised workshop matter more.
