What does BYD mean? Who builds the cars, what Blade Battery and DM-i are, and what to check in Romania
The short answer
BYD stands for “Build Your Dreams”. The company officially uses this expansion of the three letters. BYD Company Limited was founded in February 1995 in Shenzhen by Wang Chuanfu. It started with rechargeable batteries and entered the car industry in 2003. The cars are developed by the BYD Auto division, part of the Chinese BYD group.
For a buyer in Romania, the brand name explains very little about the actual car. Three distinctions matter:
- a BYD model without a combustion engine is a battery electric — BEV;
- a model with the DM-i badge is a plug-in hybrid — PHEV — and must be charged regularly to use the battery’s advantage;
- Blade Battery describes the manufacturer’s LFP battery family, not the range, charging speed or identical warranty of every model.
On 1 September 2026, the BYD Romania website listed 12 models: five electric and seven plug-in hybrid. The range changes quickly, and the prices on the site are described as indicative. Before a deposit, ask for an offer with the version, battery, power, equipment, delivery time and written warranty conditions for the VIN or the ordered configuration.
1. What BYD means and who owns the brand
BYD Europe explains the name with the phrase “Build Your Dreams”. The same source places the company’s founding in February 1995 and shows that the business started with 20 employees, making nickel-cadmium batteries.
The founder, Wang Chuanfu, remains chairman and CEO. His official profile shows that he studied metallurgical physical chemistry and worked in non-ferrous metals research and the battery industry before founding the company. That origin explains BYD’s unusual development order: cells and accumulators first, then cars.
BYD Company is not only a carmaker. The group has activities in four officially presented areas: automobiles, electronics, new energy and rail transport. BYD Auto is the division that produces passenger cars, commercial vehicles and other electrified vehicles.
Do not confuse country of origin with the assembly site of each example. BYD is a Chinese group based in Shenzhen, but it is expanding production outside China. For the car you buy, the manufacturer field, plant and country of origin in that VIN’s documents matter, not a general formula found in an article.
2. How a battery maker came to sell cars
BYD’s official timeline marks several useful dates:
- 1995: battery production begins in Shenzhen;
- 2003: the group enters the car industry;
- 2005: the first own production car appears, the BYD F3;
- 2008: the F3DM is launched, a series-produced plug-in hybrid;
- 2020: the company presents Blade Battery;
- 2021: e-Platform 3.0 is launched for electric cars;
- 2022: BYD stops production of cars powered only by combustion engines and continues with electrics and plug-in hybrids.
This history does not automatically prove that every BYD is reliable or suitable for Romania. It does show why the battery, power electronics and component integration sit at the centre of the brand’s presentation. At purchase, the integration advantage has to be checked through the model’s data: usable capacity, WLTP consumption, charging power, preconditioning, warranty and access to service.
The brand’s growth is also visible in recent figures. In July 2026, BYD led Chinese groups in the European ranking cited in the analysis of the record share of Chinese cars in Europe. In Romania, the Seal U DM-i was first among Chinese-brand models in our ranking based on July 2026 registrations. Registrations are not a quality test; they only show that the brand is no longer a marginal presence.
3. Which BYD models were listed in Romania on 1 September 2026
The official BYD Romania page splits the offer into electrics and plug-in hybrids. On the date of the check, the list looked like this:
| Type | Models shown on the Romania website | What you need to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | Dolphin Surf, Atto 2, Seal, Seal U, Sealion 7 | they have no petrol engine; compare the battery, WLTP range and AC/DC charging |
| Plug-in hybrid | Dolphin G DM-i, Atto 2 DM-i, Seal 5 DM-i, Sealion 5 DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i Touring, Seal U DM-i | they have an externally chargeable battery and a petrol engine; consumption depends heavily on how often you charge |
A shared name does not mean the same car. Atto 2 and Atto 2 DM-i have different types of powertrain. Electric Seal U and Seal U DM-i should not be compared only by body or price: the first depends entirely on charging, the second can continue on petrol after the battery level drops.
For a PHEV, ask yourself where you will charge it. If you have no socket at home, at work or on a regular route, you will carry the battery without constantly using electric running. Our guide to the difference between full hybrid and plug-in hybrid explains why the “hybrid” label is not enough.
4. What Blade Battery is and what the name does not tell you
Blade Battery is the name BYD uses for its long, flat cells with lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry — LFP. The BYD Romania Blade Battery page says the technology is used on both electrics and DM-i models and presents more than 5,000 charge-discharge cycles as a design value.
LFP does not use the same chemistry as an NMC battery with nickel, manganese and cobalt. It has a different thermal profile and can accept many cycles, but the chemistry name does not answer every owner question. On the car’s spec sheet you still have to check separately:
- gross capacity and, if published, usable capacity;
- WLTP range for the ordered version and wheel size;
- maximum AC and DC charging power;
- charging time in the interval indicated by the manufacturer;
- whether battery preconditioning exists and how it is activated;
- consumption for your route, including winter and motorway use;
- the capacity threshold and mileage limit in the applicable warranty.
Do not turn the nail-penetration test used in BYD materials into an absolute guarantee against fire or damage. It is a laboratory test for a cell. The safety of the complete car depends on the body, pack protection, thermal management, post-accident repairs and charging procedures.
For a used car, ask for the diagnostic report, the charging history available in service and an inspection of the underside. The guide to electric-car battery degradation and inspection shows what can be measured and what should not be inferred only from the range shown on the dashboard.
5. What DM-i means
BYD presents the DM-i badge as Dual Mode Intelligence. The official technical explanation describes two main modes: EV, in which the car uses battery energy, and HEV, in which the system combines the petrol engine, generator, electric motor and battery according to load and state of charge.
The letter “i” refers to intelligent control of the system, not to a second battery and not to all-wheel drive. A DM-i is a plug-in hybrid and has a charging port. Drive, power, electric range and the possibility of fast charging differ between models and versions.
Very low consumption figures on a PHEV spec sheet are measured in a cycle that starts with a charged battery. For real use, ask for two distinct values: the weighted homologation consumption and consumption with the battery depleted. Then calculate how many kilometres you can cover electrically between two usual charges.
If you are choosing among three electrified SUVs, the comparison MG HS Hybrid+ vs BYD Seal U DM-i vs Geely Starray EM-i shows the practical consequence: a full hybrid does not charge from a socket, while the advantage of the two PHEVs depends on regular charging.
6. What e-Platform 3.0 is
e-Platform 3.0 is the electric architecture presented by BYD in 2021. The company lists the Blade battery, the 8-in-1 electric drive unit, the heat pump and electronic integration among the platform elements.
The platform name does not mean that all cars have the same battery, range, voltage, charging power or equipment. It should not be used to transfer a specification from Seal to Dolphin Surf. Check the spec sheet and the manual of the exact model.
A practical point appears with software. Updates, the digital key, the app, the owner account and connected services can depend on the market and the data registered by the dealer. On a used imported BYD, confirm before purchase that the VIN can be taken on by a workshop in Romania and that the previous owner can remove the car from their account.
7. BYD warranty: ask for the document that applies to your car
Warranty should not be summarised by a single number from an advert. A Romanian-language warranty manual published on the BYD website indicates, for basic cover, 72 months or 150,000 km, and for the powertrain 96 months or 150,000 km. The same manual indicates 96 months or 200,000 km for the traction battery, with a minimum of 70% capacity, but it contains exclusions and different cover for consumables and other components.
At the same time, the Romanian Blade Battery page showed on 1 September 2026 8 years or 250,000 km, with SOH above 70%. The difference between the technology page and the warranty manual is exactly why you must ask for the contractual conditions that apply to the model, the date of first registration and the country of sale. Do not assume automatically that the higher figure transfers to every example.
Before signing, ask the dealer to note in the offer:
- the general warranty and the start date;
- the traction-battery limit and the SOH threshold;
- cover for the electric motor, inverter and DM-i system;
- service intervals and permitted tolerances;
- conditions for transferring the warranty on resale;
- roadside assistance and the countries in which it is valid;
- the duration of connected services and the cost after the included period.
8. Checklist before you buy a new or used BYD
- The model and powertrain are written in full: electric or DM-i plug-in hybrid.
- The VIN, model year and country of origin are confirmed in the documents.
- The offer specifies the battery, power, drive and equipment level.
- The final price includes VAT, applicable bonuses, options and delivery costs.
- The delivery time and conditions for returning the deposit are written down.
- You have received the warranty manual valid for the actual car.
- The dealer has confirmed in writing the time, mileage and SOH limits for the battery.
- You have identified the nearest authorised BYD dealer and workshop.
- The workshop can offer a replacement car or a mobility solution, if that matters to you.
- You have asked for an indicative lead time for body parts and windscreen.
- You have checked service rates and intervals for the exact version.
- On an electric, you have tested AC and DC charging or received a demonstration.
- On a DM-i, you have driven with a charged battery and with a low level, including on an open road.
- Range and consumption have been compared for your route, not only against the highest figure in an advert.
- The app, NFC key, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and updates work on the tested car.
- Child seats, the boot, visibility and turning circle have been tried.
- Casco, RCA, tyres and a charging station have entered the total budget.
- On a used car, the previous owner’s account can be removed, and the warranty has been confirmed against the VIN.
- The used car has been inspected on a lift for battery impacts and structural repairs.
- The contract is not based on an “indicative” price; the sum and configuration are final.
The terms of the BYD Romania website state that prices shown online are indicative and do not constitute an offer for sale. The practical difference is simple: a screenshot does not replace an offer signed by the dealer.
For a used example, add the checks from the guide to used Chinese cars: European version, type approval, cable and connector, parts, digital account, history and warranty transfer.
Frequently asked questions
What do the letters BYD mean?
BYD is officially presented as the short form of “Build Your Dreams”. The company uses this phrase in its European and global materials.
Is BYD a Chinese brand?
Yes. BYD Company Limited is based in Shenzhen, China. The exact plant of a car must be checked in the VIN documents, because the group is expanding international production.
Who founded BYD?
Wang Chuanfu founded the company in February 1995 and is chairman and CEO. BYD started as a battery maker and entered the car industry in 2003.
Does BYD make only electric cars?
No. The current car range includes battery electrics and DM-i plug-in hybrids. The group also operates in electronics, energy storage and rail transport.
What does DM-i mean at BYD?
DM-i means Dual Mode Intelligence. It is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can run electrically and can use the petrol engine in hybrid mode. The car must be charged from a socket to use the electric range regularly.
Is Blade Battery an LFP battery?
Yes. Blade Battery uses lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry and an elongated cell shape. Capacity, range, charging and warranty, however, differ between models.
What warranty does a BYD battery have in Romania?
Do not use a single figure for all cars. The Blade Battery page showed 8 years/250,000 km and SOH above 70%, while the Romanian-language warranty manual available on the site indicated 8 years/200,000 km for the traction battery. Ask the dealer for the document that applies to the model and sale date.
Is it worth buying a BYD in Romania?
It can be worth it if the model matches your journeys, you can charge the chosen variant, you have accessible authorised service and you receive the warranty, price and delivery time in writing. If you cannot charge regularly, compare a DM-i with a full hybrid; if you do long trips in an electric, check charging speed and the stations on your routes before ordering.
