The electric SUV offer in Romania can no longer be reduced to two or three models. In September 2026, a buyer can choose between compact cars at about €36,000, family models with more than 600 km of WLTP range and premium SUVs that quote charging in minutes, not hours.
The ranking below does not copy a top from another market. We selected models available to order in Romania and checked the figures in local configurators and official pages. The order emphasises the balance of price, range, charging, space and ease of use in Romania. It is not a ranking of acceleration, nor of the largest battery.

1. Kia EV3: the most balanced choice
Kia EV3 takes first place because it covers well the most important requirements of a Romanian buyer: dimensions suitable for the city, a 460-litre boot, high range and a price that remains below that of many family electric SUVs. Kia Romania displays a promotional price from €36,621.
The version with the 58.3 kWh battery offers up to 436 km WLTP, and Long Range uses an 81.4 kWh battery and can reach about 600 km, depending on configuration. Rapid charging from 10% to 80% takes 29-31 minutes in ideal conditions. The important minus is the 400 V architecture: EV3 does not charge as quickly as Ioniq 5, but it compensates through efficiency and range.
2. Skoda Elroq: the rational electric SUV for a family
Elroq is the right alternative for the buyer who wants familiar ergonomics, space and a well-represented service network. Skoda Romania indicates a starting price of €36,444 and range, depending on version, between 448 and 574 km WLTP.
It is 4.49 metres long with a 2.77-metre wheelbase, enough to work as a family's main car. Elroq does not win through a single spectacular figure, but through a coherent package: space, rear-wheel drive in the usual versions, an all-wheel-drive option and a competitive entry cost.
3. Tesla Model Y: the simplest option for long journeys
Model Y remains hard to ignore if the car will often be used outside the city. The Premium Long Range rear-wheel-drive version reaches 609 km of WLTP range, and route planning and Supercharger integration reduce the number of decisions the driver has to make on the road.
Tesla frequently changes prices and stocks, which is why the correct figure must be checked in the configurator on the day of the order. The buyer must also accept the cabin philosophy dominated by a screen, with few physical controls. Model Y is the practical choice for range, efficiency and charging ecosystem, not necessarily for traditional ergonomics.
4. Renault Scenic E-Tech electric: the family electric car
Scenic is one of the models that make the best use of the space of an electric platform. The version available in Romania with an 87 kWh battery and a 220 hp motor starts at €46,450, according to the Renault configurator. Range reaches 625 km WLTP in favourable configurations.
The 545-litre boot and a cabin conceived for five people recommend it to families that do not want a very large SUV. Rapid charging is not its absolute strong point: Renault quotes 37 minutes for 15-80% on the 87 kWh version. Scenic answers well, however, the buyer who charges at home and makes long trips occasionally.
5. Hyundai Ioniq 5: champion of short charging stops
Ioniq 5 uses an 800 V architecture and can go from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes at a compatible station. Hyundai Auto Romania lists the 84 kWh, 229 hp rear-wheel-drive version with 570 km of range, at a recommended price of €45,375.
It is wider and larger than it looks in photographs, and the long wheelbase offers a lot of passenger space. For anyone living in a block of flats and depending more on public rapid chargers, a good charging curve can matter more than another 30-40 km written on the WLTP sheet.
6. Ford Explorer electric: the offer that must be calculated carefully
Ford Explorer electric can be one of the most accessible entries in the segment, but only if the promotion conditions are read. Ford Romania displays Explorer Style from €27,500, a sum that includes Ford support, dealer contribution and the Rabla eco-voucher, if the programme applies under the conditions described.
The base version has 444 km WLTP, and Explorer with extended range can reach 601 km. It is a good choice if the final written dealer offer remains close to the promoted price. Without Rabla or with other financing conditions, the comparison must be redone.
7. BMW iX3: the premium benchmark for range and charging
The new-generation BMW iX3 moves the discussion into the premium zone. BMW Romania declares for iX3 50 xDrive between 717 and 805 km WLTP and a maximum charging power of 400 kW. Under the right conditions, the manufacturer estimates that the car can recover up to 372 km of WLTP range in ten minutes.
These performances come with a higher price than volume models. iX3 is worth putting on the list if the budget is premium and the car will frequently make long routes; for urban commuting, its technology does not automatically justify the cost difference.
8. Toyota bZ4X: the battery warranty weighs heavily
The updated Toyota bZ4X offers two batteries, 57.7 and 73.1 kWh, front- or all-wheel drive and up to 569 km WLTP. The Romanian configurator starts at €43,058 for the Dynamic version with the smaller battery.
The distinctive argument is the battery-care programme: Toyota says it can cover retention of at least 70% of initial capacity up to 10 years or one million kilometres, subject to the programme conditions. For an owner who intends to keep the car a long time, that provision can matter more than a small range difference.
9. Volkswagen ID.4: the safe choice, without conceptual surprises
ID.4 starts at €39,945 in the Volkswagen Romania configurator. The range covers rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, from 190 to 340 hp, and declared range can rise towards 520 km, depending on battery and equipment.
It is no longer the newest model in the ranking, but it benefits from a wide dealer network and the experience Volkswagen Group has accumulated with the MEB platform. It is relevant especially for the buyer who prefers a brand well represented locally and wants to find service easily in several cities.
10. BYD Sealion 7: a lot of equipment and performance
BYD Sealion 7 starts in Romania at €48,800 in the Comfort version, with an 82.5 kWh Blade battery and 482 km of range. The BYD Romania configurator also includes two all-wheel-drive variants; Excellence AWD has a 91.3 kWh battery, 502 km of range and DC charging of up to 230 kW.
It is more expensive than Kia EV3 or Skoda Elroq, but it offers a well-equipped cabin, a 520-litre boot plus a 58-litre front compartment and, in AWD versions, sports-car acceleration. Before ordering, it is worth checking the distance to the nearest BYD dealer and workshop, because the local network is still smaller than that of established brands.
How to choose the right electric SUV in Romania
WLTP range is useful for comparison, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed distance. At motorway speed and in winter, real range can drop visibly. For a 500 km trip, consumption, the charging curve, battery preconditioning and the reliability of stations on the route all matter at once.
Before ordering, check these five things:
- whether you can install a wallbox at home or at work;
- how much the version with the battery and equipment you need costs, without conditional bonuses;
- maximum accepted AC and DC power, and the 10-80% time;
- the existence of a heat pump and whether it is standard or optional;
- the distance to service and the exact conditions of the battery warranty.
For most buyers, Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq are the most logical starting points. Tesla Model Y and Renault Scenic are better suited to families that make long trips, Ioniq 5 to those who depend on rapid charging, and BMW iX3 to the premium budget. The final dealer offer can still change the order, especially when Rabla, financing and cars available in stock enter the calculation.
