Opel Frontera Start becomes the brand’s cheapest car in Germany: family SUV from €21,990

Opel has introduced the new Frontera Start trim in Germany, positioned as the price entry into the brand’s range. With a recommended price of €21,990, including VAT, the Frontera Start is now the most affordable Opel passenger car on this market, even though it is a five-seat SUV, larger than the Corsa.

The announcement was published by Opel on 20 August. The price applies to Germany and is not automatically the list price in Romania, where configurations, taxes and commercial offers may differ.

New petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox

The Frontera Start receives a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine with three cylinders and 74 kW, equivalent to 100 hp. The powertrain is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

According to WLTP data communicated by Opel, this version has combined consumption of 5.9-6.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 134-138 g/km. It complements the hybrid and electric variants already available; it does not replace them.

What the Frontera Start version includes

To keep the price down, Opel has simplified the equipment. The model has 16-inch steel wheels with black covers, black mirror housings and exterior elements with a black finish. Air conditioning, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, rear parking sensors and lane-departure warning are included as standard.

Instead of a central infotainment screen, the Frontera Start offers a smartphone dock in the centre console. Driving information is displayed on a 10-inch instrument screen. Opel also mentions a 60:40 split rear bench; the boot has 460 litres in the normal configuration.

Below the Corsa, but only on the German market

In the German configurator, the Frontera Start costs €2,750 less than the previous entry threshold in the SUV range. For comparison, the Opel Corsa starts at €23,340 and the Mokka at €27,390, according to information published by Carscoops based on the local Opel range.

The decision shows growing pressure in the affordable SUV segment: the Frontera competes directly with models such as the Citroen C3 Aircross, Dacia Duster, Renault Captur or MG ZS, and a lower list price can matter more than equipment level for customers looking for space and a controlled purchase cost. For the Romanian market, availability of this trim and the price set by the importer remain to be seen.
