Volkswagen is expanding the digital key in Europe for seven electric models in the ID family, and Romania is among the markets where the service is available. A phone or smartwatch can be used to unlock and start the car, but the brand is not dropping the physical key. On its Romanian website, Volkswagen describes the function as an option that “complements the vehicle’s classic key”.
A model’s presence on the compatibility list does not guarantee that every example can use the service. Factory-fitted hardware, a minimum software version and a compatible mobile device are required.
Which Volkswagen models get the digital key
The list communicated for Samsung Wallet integration comprises seven models:
- Volkswagen ID. Polo;
- Volkswagen ID. Cross;
- Volkswagen ID.3 Neo;
- Volkswagen ID.4;
- Volkswagen ID.5;
- Volkswagen ID.7;
- Volkswagen ID. Buzz.
The list includes both models already on sale, such as the ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID. Buzz, and cars from the new generation of Volkswagen’s electric range. For the ID.3 Neo, the manufacturer had announced availability in Romania from September 2026.
How Volkswagen’s digital key works
After setup, the key is stored in the phone’s digital wallet. On devices that have Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, the car can recognise the user’s approach and allow access without the phone being taken out of a pocket. If the phone only supports NFC, it must be held near the car’s reading zone.
The function can be used to lock, unlock and start. Samsung’s integration also allows the boot to be opened through the Remote Key Entry function. Volkswagen mentions, for its models, use of the key in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet on compatible devices, and Samsung has separately announced integration in Samsung Wallet.
Compatibility should not be assumed for every Android phone. NFC and UWB technologies, the phone model, the operating-system version and digital-wallet availability differ from one device to another.
What conditions the car must meet
According to information published by Samsung for the European launch, eligible cars must meet several conditions at the same time:
- be manufactured from 27 April 2026;
- run Volkswagen ID 6.0.1 software or a newer version;
- have the “Preparation for Digital Key” option installed;
- be used in a country where the service is active, and Romania is on the list;
- be paired with a compatible phone or smartwatch.
As a result, an older ID.4, ID.5 or ID.7 does not automatically receive the digital key through a simple update. Samsung states that cars produced before the indicated date are not compatible, because the function also needs dedicated hardware components.
When ordering a new car, the option must be checked in the configurator or with the dealer. When buying a used Volkswagen ID, the year of first registration is not enough: the chassis number, manufacture date, software version and exact equipment list are relevant.
The key can be sent to another person
The owner can distribute digital keys to family members, colleagues or other people and can later withdraw access. The rights granted can be managed from the digital wallet, without handing over the physical key.
This possibility can be useful when the same car is driven by several people. The number of keys that can be shared and the options available can, however, vary depending on the car model and the mobile ecosystem used.
What happens if the phone is lost
Samsung says the key information is stored on the device and protected by the Knox platform, and access may require biometric authentication or a PIN. If the phone is lost or stolen, the digital key can be managed or removed remotely through Samsung Find.
These measures do not make the physical key unnecessary. A drained phone battery, a device change or a configuration problem can temporarily block digital access. The classic key therefore remains the backup solution and continues to be supplied with the car.
What to check before activation
For an owner in Romania, the practical list is short: confirm the car’s eligibility from the chassis number, the presence of the hardware option, ID 6.0.1 software or newer, and phone compatibility. Only after these checks can pairing with the accepted digital wallet be carried out.
The European launch of Samsung Wallet integration began on 18 August 2026. Actual availability may appear in stages, depending on the model, configuration and updates distributed by Volkswagen and by the phone manufacturer.
