The Geely Cityray belongs on a test-drive list if you want a compact petrol SUV with an automatic gearbox and a long equipment list, and if the 22,990 € promotional price is still available in writing for the car you choose. On the actual car, check menu language, phone pairing, the microphone, the camera and how quickly the system starts; a long list does not say how well the interface works every day.

- wireless phone charging;
- multicolour ambient lighting;
- an electric passenger seat;

At promotional prices, the gap versus GK is 2,000 €. GF makes sense if you will use the powered tailgate and want the extra comfort kit. The 19-inch wheels should still be tried on broken surfaces, and tyre prices should be asked before you choose. GK with 18-inch wheels can be the more rational option for comfort, potholes and consumable costs.
GF+ Sport adds visual items: black outlines, black 19-inch wheels, a two-tone body, a spoiler, metal pedals and central exhaust tips. It costs 1,000 € more than GF in the documented promotion. It does not bring another engine, another drivetrain or superior technical performance in the sheet consulted.
3. The 174 hp engine and the 7DCT: what to check on a test drive
Cityray is sold locally in a single technical configuration: a 1.5-litre turbo petrol, 174 hp, 290 Nm, front-wheel drive and 7DCT. Geely says the dual clutch is oil-cooled and that a gear change can take 0.2 seconds. That is the manufacturer’s technical description, not a promise that the transmission will need no maintenance.
On a test drive, do not chase only the 7.9-second 0–100 km/h figure. For daily use, more relevant are:
- a very gentle pull-away;
- crawling in a queue;
- repeated forward and reverse manoeuvres;
- a hill start and Auto-Hold intervention;
- the response once the engine and gearbox are warm;
- switching among Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart;
- the response to an overtake with the car loaded.
A dual-clutch gearbox should not be judged like a conventional torque converter or a hybrid e-CVT. Geely publishes 6.3 l/100 km on the NEDC cycle and 149 g CO₂/km on the price list. NEDC is an older approval cycle, and the figure should not be presented as guaranteed consumption in Bucharest, on the motorway or in winter.
For a fair comparison:
- ask for the type-approval values from the car’s certificate of conformity;
- ask what value will appear in the CIV and in fiscal documents;
- drive a test route that includes slow traffic, a clear stretch and a hill;
- reset the trip computer only with the representative’s agreement and note the distance;
- compare a calculated tankful at the pump after purchase, not only the onboard computer;
- include wheels, temperature, load and driving style in the calculation.

5. Dimensions and boot: compact enough for town?
At 4.51 metres long and 1.865 metres wide, Cityray should be measured as a family compact SUV, not as a very small crossover. The 2.701-metre wheelbase can help passenger space, but the figures do not replace a trial with the seats set for the people who will drive.
Before ordering:
- measure garage-door width and the parking space, not only length;
- fit a child seat and check the rear-door angle;
- try head and knee room with the driver sitting normally;
- put the pram, suitcases or holiday crate you actually use in the boot;
- check sill height and the space under the floor;
- compare rear visibility through the glass with the camera image.
The claimed 571-litre boot looks generous on paper, but the document does not explain the measuring method in the table. Compare shape and real use, not only the litre figure of a rival measured another way.
6. Safety: ADAS kit is not the same as a Euro NCAP test
The GK list includes six airbags, stability control, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and centring, blind-spot monitoring, door-open warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The surround camera also has a representation the manufacturer calls a “transparent chassis view”.
These systems need to be tried on roads with real markings. Check whether warnings are clear, whether you can adjust intervention level and whether settings survive a restart. No Level 2 system relieves the driver of watching the road and controlling the car.
At the time of research, Cityray did not appear as a separately assessed model in the public Euro NCAP database. Results for other Geely models cannot be transferred to Cityray. The manufacturer’s high-strength steel percentage and ADAS list are useful information, but they do not replace an independent crash test of this configuration.

If the dealer can answer clearly on service and parts, and the promotional price remains without hidden costs, Cityray becomes a competitive alternative.
