Used Lexus NX in 2026: what to check on 300h, 350h, 450h+, e-CVT and E-Four
The short answer
A used Lexus NX is worth considering if you want a hybrid SUV for town and long trips, but the purchase must be decided by generation, drivetrain and the car’s history, not by brand reputation. For the first European generation, the reference version is NX 300h, a 2.5-litre full hybrid, with front-wheel drive or E-Four. The second generation brought NX 350h full hybrid and NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid, the latter having a larger battery and a charging port.
Before a deposit, ask for the VIN and a recent Lexus Hybrid Health Check report. Check separately the petrol engine, traction battery, hybrid-system cooling, e-CVT transaxle, the electric rear axle on E-Four, the 12 V battery, brakes, suspension and assistance systems. On NX 450h+ AC charging must also be tested with the car’s cable.
Do not buy an example only because it has an older battery certificate or because it runs electrically for a few hundred metres. The report must be correlated with full diagnosis, service history, physical condition and the written terms of the warranty applicable to that VIN.
NX 300h, NX 350h or NX 450h+: which car is in the advert
Lexus launched the first-generation NX in Europe in 2014. The NX 300h version combined a 2.5-litre petrol engine, in the Atkinson cycle, with the hybrid system and developed 197 hp. The facelift presented in 2017 brought design changes, larger multimedia screens, suspension tuning and Lexus Safety System+ in the European range.
The second generation, presented in 2021, changed the hybrid systems and electronics. NX 350h was announced with 242 hp and front- or all-wheel-drive variants, and NX 450h+ with 306 hp, all-wheel drive, an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and official electric range of 63 km in the WLTP cycle used at launch. The figure is not a promise for every used car, in every season.
| Version | Reference configuration | The check that can stop the purchase |
|---|---|---|
| NX 300h, 2014-2021 | 2.5-litre full hybrid, 197 hp; FWD or E-Four | battery report, hybrid cooling, e-CVT, history and damage |
| NX 300h facelift, from 2017 | the same hybrid base, with equipment and safety updates | real equipment, camera/radar and calibration after repairs |
| NX 350h, from 2021 | 2.5-litre full hybrid, 242 hp; FWD or AWD, depending on market | battery, e-CVT, E-Four if fitted, software and ADAS |
| NX 450h+, from 2021 | 2.5-litre PHEV, 306 hp; AWD, 18.1 kWh battery | AC charging, battery, cable, cooling and electric-to-petrol transition |
In other markets there were also petrol-only versions. Do not automatically transfer the specifications of an American, Russian or Asian car onto a European example. VIN, CIV, country of first delivery and the equipment sheet must describe the same configuration.
1. Identify generation, drivetrain and country of origin
The year of first registration is not enough for identification. A car built before the facelift can be registered later, and an advert can wrongly use a photograph, a power figure or a name copied from another version. Ask for the VIN serial before you go to viewing and check the build date, model code, power, driven axle and equipment.
On NX 300h and NX 350h there are front-wheel-drive examples and E-Four examples. On the latter, the rear axle is driven by an electric motor, without a mechanical shaft permanently linking front to rear. That changes the inspection points: the workshop must read the hybrid-system modules and inspect the motor, wiring and rear-axle mounts, not look for a conventional all-wheel-drive transmission.
Check the country of origin as well. Warranty documents, service intervals, displayed units, maps, connected services and configurations can differ. For an import, ask for the foreign papers and history before entry into Romania; a local certificate does not automatically reconstruct the whole life of the car.
2. Hybrid battery: ask for a report, not a dashboard estimate
Displayed electric range and the minutes in which the petrol engine stays off do not, by themselves, measure battery condition. Temperature, state of charge, climate control, route and power demand quickly change a full hybrid’s behaviour. The relevant test is the system report, interpreted together with faults, cooling and the road test.
Lexus Romania describes Hybrid Health Check as a check of the battery, the propulsion system and cooling, completed with a report. Ask for the full document, date, mileage and VIN, not just the seller’s statement that “the battery came out well”. If the report is old, repeat the check before purchase.
Check the battery cooling-air intake, the area around it and traces of fluids or work. Do not dismantle high-voltage elements in a car park. Inspection of orange cables, the battery and HV components must be done by qualified staff, with the appropriate procedures.
A favourable report does not certify the petrol engine, brakes, body or mileage. Use it as one piece of the car’s file, alongside the guide on checking a used full hybrid.
3. The Lexus e-CVT is not a belt CVT gearbox
On NX 300h, Lexus describes the hybrid transaxle as an assembly with two electric machines and planetary gear sets. Therefore the e-CVT must not be confused with a conventional belt CVT. The commercial name does not, however, remove the need for inspection: bearings, seals, electrical connections, fluid and the rest of the transmission can have wear or traces of work.
Start the car completely cold, select D and R, run slowly forwards and backwards, then do an urban route and one at higher speed. The move from standstill to acceleration must be assessed without the radio. Bearing noise, vibration, knocks, warning lights or differences between engine speed and expected acceleration must be noted and diagnosed; the symptom does not identify the part by itself.
Ask for invoices for work carried out and the maintenance schedule for the VIN. Do not automatically apply a change interval found for another market, another year or another transmission. If the seller says the fluid is “for life”, ask the workshop inspecting the car to check the specific documentation and the condition of the assembly.
4. E-Four and tyres: AWD must be checked separately
On the first-generation NX 300h, the rear electric motor intervenes when the system requests extra traction. On the second generation, Lexus announced a revised E-Four version for NX 350h AWD and NX 450h+. In both cases, the AWD or E-Four badge does not prove that the rear axle works correctly.
Diagnosis must include all propulsion modules. On a lift, the rear motor and reduction gear, seals, accessible wiring, bearings, driveshafts, gaiters and impact marks are checked. On the road test watch rumble, vibration and messages that appear after acceleration, regenerative braking or tight manoeuvres.
Compare all four tyres: size, brand, model, index, wear and DOT date. A large wear difference can indicate replacements done in pieces, incorrect geometry or damage. Do not, however, turn mismatched tyres into a diagnosis of the AWD system; they are a reason for extra measurements and an immediate quote.
5. NX 450h+: charging and the PHEV battery need their own test
NX 450h+ can run electrically farther than a full hybrid, but only if the battery is charged and the system works correctly. At launch, Lexus communicated an 18.1 kWh battery and 63 km WLTP electric range. On a used car, the observed distance depends on temperature, speed, terrain, climate control, tyres, state of charge and battery condition.
Do the test in this order:
- inspect the port, cover, seals and the cable supplied with the car;
- connect the car to a known AC station and check plug lock, start and session stability;
- read faults of the onboard charger, battery, inverter and cooling;
- run electrically, then watch petrol-engine start and the transition between power sources;
- repeat the check after the assembly has warmed up and climate control has been running.
Do not deduce battery health from estimated range immediately after resetting the trip computer. Ask for the report and the test conditions. If you have nowhere to charge regularly, compare cost and consumption on your route with an NX 350h; the used PHEV guide explains why an uncharged battery changes the promised economy.
6. The 2.5-litre engine and cooling are checked cold and hot
The hybrid system does not cancel the petrol engine. At first viewing, ask for the car to be cold. Watch starting, noises, smoke, vibration and warning lights, then let the system start the petrol engine in a controlled way. Check levels and any traces of oil or coolant only in safe conditions, without opening a hot circuit.
The test must last long enough for warm-up. Check temperature, climate-control operation, fans, pumps and values available at diagnosis. Any repeated coolant top-up requires identifying the cause. Recently washed stains, coolant smell or a wet undertray justify a pressure test and inspection on a lift.
Compare services with mileage and time, not just with the dashboard message. Invoices must indicate the oil, filters and actual work. A history with stamps but without dates, VIN, kilometres and operations is weaker than a coherent invoice file.
7. The 12 V battery, brakes and city wear
A full hybrid also has a conventional 12 V battery. If it is weak, the car can display messages or refuse the normal start sequence even if the traction battery is charged. Measure the 12 V battery and check the date, terminals, charging and quiescent consumption if there are symptoms. Do not assume that all faults disappear permanently after replacing it.
Regenerative braking can reduce use of the mechanical brakes, especially in town. That is why discs must be checked on both faces, along with pads, slider pins, calipers and the parking brake. Superficial rust after standing is not the same as a deeply corroded disc or a seized caliper.
Also check the inner tyre faces, wheels, bearings, dampers, bushes and geometry. Large wheels can change the first-year quote a lot. Ask for prices for the size fitted on the actual car, not for the smallest wheel available in the range.
8. Body, panoramic roof and water traces
Measure paint thickness on each panel and inspect joints, bolts, sills, the floor and jacking points. Shade differences or uneven gaps do not by themselves establish the severity of a repair, but they show where invoices, photographs and structural measurements must be sought.
On an example with a panoramic roof, test opening, closing and the sunshade. Check seals, drains, pillars, the headlining, carpet and the space under the boot floor. A strong perfume smell or a freshly washed interior does not prove a leak, but it can hide signs that must be checked after complete drying.
On an NX 450h+, the battery shield and floor need separate attention. Any deformation, deep scratch or damaged jacking point must be assessed by a qualified workshop before a deposit. Do not accept the explanation “it’s only the shield” without inspection and a quote.
9. Lexus Safety System+, the windscreen and electronics
The first-generation facelift extended Lexus Safety System+ across the European NX range, and the second generation added a newer suite. Exact equipment differs, however, by year and level. Test the camera, radar, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, sensors and parking cameras only for the functions present on that VIN.
Euro NCAP assessed the Lexus NX 350h in 2022. The sheet describes the behaviour of a new car in that year’s protocol; it does not certify a repaired example. Check the windscreen in the camera area, radar mounts, bumpers, headlights and wiring. After a windscreen change or a frontal repair, ask for the invoice and the calibration report.
Test both keys, keyless access, the tailgate, screen, navigation, climate control, seats, heating and ventilation, the audio system and the phone connection. At sale, the previous owner must be able to remove the car from their account, and the buyer to pair it to a new account. The guide for checking ADAS on a used car completes the inspection.
10. Battery warranty, RAR Auto-Pass and recalls
Warranty conditions have changed over time and can depend on first-delivery date, country of origin, services and periodic checks. The Lexus Romania page consulted on 13 September 2026 describes for HEV and PHEV a standard hybrid-system warranty of five years or 100,000 km and a Battery Care programme that can extend battery cover annually, under certain conditions. Do not presume that any NX younger than ten years is covered.
Ask for written confirmation by VIN for:
- start date and expiry date;
- the applicable mileage limit;
- the covered component: the battery or the entire hybrid system;
- annual checks carried out and any interruptions;
- validity for an imported or resold car;
- exclusions and maintenance obligations.
RAR Auto-Pass can include odometer readings, ITP, reported work and information about repairs after serious accidents or recalls existing in the RAR database. For an import, complete it with documents from the country of origin. Check open campaigns separately in the official Lexus Romania form by VIN; only the 17-character serial shows whether the actual car is included.
How to calculate the real first-year budget
Compare examples with the same formula:
purchase price + work required immediately + services due within 12 months + tyres and brakes + insurance and taxes.
Add separately any finding on the hybrid system, charging, E-Four, headlights, windscreen, roof or multimedia. Ask for written quotes by VIN. The lower price of an example without history can be cancelled by four tyres, brakes, an ADAS calibration and an unbudgeted electrical problem.
You can start from Lexus NX listings in Romania, but sort only after you have chosen between full hybrid and PHEV. For alternatives, compare used full-hybrid SUVs under €20,000 and used premium SUVs under €25,000. If you are interested in the new model, do not mix used-car data with the changes announced for Lexus NX 2027.

Frequently asked questions
Is a used Lexus NX 300h reliable?
There is no correct answer for every example. History, accidents, mileage, hybrid-system cooling, the battery, the e-CVT and maintenance weigh more than general reputation. Choose the car that passes inspection and has coherent documents.
What should I choose for town: NX 300h or NX 350h?
Both are full hybrids and can be suitable in urban traffic. NX 300h belongs to the first generation and is as a rule older; NX 350h belongs to the generation launched in 2021, with another hybrid system and newer electronics. Compare condition, equipment and total cost, not just displayed consumption.
Is NX 450h+ worth it if I cannot charge at home?
The main advantage of a PHEV appears when the battery is charged regularly. Without predictable AC access, compare consumption, price and extra mass on your route with an NX 350h. Do not buy 450h+ only for the official electric-range figure.
Does the e-CVT on Lexus NX have a belt?
Not in the sense of a conventional CVT gearbox. Lexus describes the NX 300h hybrid transaxle with electric machines and planetary gears. It still must be checked for noises, leaks, faults and traces of work.
Is E-Four permanent all-wheel drive?
It is electric all-wheel drive, with a separate motor on the rear axle. The operating strategy differs between generations and conditions. What matters at purchase is that the system is identified correctly, diagnosed and tested, not described by a generic label.
How long should a Lexus NX hybrid battery last?
Age alone does not set battery condition. Ask for a Hybrid Health Check, diagnosis, a cooling check and warranty terms by VIN. A percentage or a verbal promise without method, date and report is not enough.
Does the battery warranty transfer automatically to the new owner?
Do not assume transfer or continuity. Ask Lexus Romania to confirm in writing the car’s eligibility, start date, mileage limit, required checks and any programme interruptions for that VIN.
Which documents are decisive before a deposit?
The VIN, CIV, registration document, contract, invoices, service history, import documents and RAR Auto-Pass must describe the same car. Add the Hybrid Health Check report, warranty confirmation, recall status and the independent workshop quote.
