BMW has revealed the eighth-generation 3 Series, bringing the company’s Neue Klasse design, software and electronic architecture into the centre of its sedan range. The launch is deliberately split between powertrains: the first electric 3 Series is called the BMW i3, while the petrol cars keep the 3 Series name and use 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.
That makes the new car less a single drivetrain story than a common model family. The body, cabin concept and driver-assistance strategy are shared, while the battery-electric and combustion versions retain hardware differences where the two systems require them. BMW also says a plug-in hybrid version will be added over the coming year, although it has not released its technical data or market timing.
M350 xDrive is the petrol flagship
The European BMW M350 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine with a crankshaft-driven starter-generator. BMW quotes 326 kW, or 443 hp, a 0–100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The car sits at the M Performance end of the 3 Series range, below a full M3 in BMW’s wider hierarchy.
The launch range also includes four-cylinder petrol derivatives using the latest TwinPower Turbo technology. BMW has not published every market-specific output and equipment combination in the global press release, so a European 320 should not be assumed to have identical specifications to a North American 330.
BMW USA lists the M350 xDrive at 437 hp, with 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Those figures belong to the US specification and measurement convention. The global and European press material uses 443 hp, 4.1 seconds and 250 km/h. Reporting the numbers with their market context matters because they are not interchangeable headline figures.
Drift Moment arrives later
The M350 xDrive introduces a feature BMW calls Drift Moment. In the manufacturer’s description, the system can direct the engine’s power to the rear wheels and remove the front axle from the equation for a controlled slide. Motor1.com reported the same feature as a factory drift mode and noted that it is intended to be added through a software update in 2027.
It will not be available at the start of deliveries. That distinction is important for buyers comparing launch cars with later software versions. BMW has not yet published a complete list of operating conditions, legal restrictions or regional availability.
Drift Moment also does not change the driver’s responsibility on public roads. A software function designed for sliding manoeuvres belongs on a closed course and does not make such driving appropriate in traffic.
One design for several drivetrains
The new 3 Series uses Neue Klasse styling without abandoning the sedan’s familiar proportions. BMW describes a 2.5-box shape, a longer wheelbase, short overhangs, flush door handles and a front graphic that combines the kidneys and twin headlights. M Performance cars can use yellow light elements inspired by BMW’s motorsport design language.
The petrol cars are available with 18- to 20-inch wheels, while the electric i3 range can be specified with 19- to 21-inch wheels. The M350 adds black exterior details, a rear spoiler, quad exhaust outlets and M Sport brakes. M Sport and M Sport Professional packages will be available, but equipment depends on market and trim.
BMW plans to add more BMW Individual paint finishes during 2027. This is a small detail, but it shows how the common exterior is being used as a family structure: the electric and petrol cars look closely related rather than being separated into two visual sub-brands.
Panoramic iDrive changes the cabin layout
Every new 3 Series is built around BMW Panoramic iDrive and BMW Operating System X. The interface combines BMW Panoramic Vision, an optional 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch central display and a multifunction steering wheel. Panoramic Vision places information across the lower windscreen area, while the central display is angled towards the driver.
BMW retains touch, haptic and voice interaction. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can be extended with Amazon Alexa+ technology in markets where the service is offered. Software updates are intended to add functions over time, while BMW Digital Premium brings additional navigation, security and entertainment services.
Motor1.com describes the central screen as trapezoidal and notes that the new 3 Series does not offer the separate passenger display found in larger BMW models. BMW’s official material lists electrically adjustable seats with memory, several interior themes, My Modes and optional Harman Kardon audio. These descriptions should not be read as a promise that every item is standard on the base car.
The BMW i3 comes in two electric versions
The BMW i3 40 xDrive produces 275 kW, or 374 hp, and uses an 82.8-kWh high-voltage battery. BMW quotes a maximum WLTP range of 710 km. The i3 50 xDrive produces 345 kW, or 469 hp, uses a 108.7-kWh battery and has a maximum WLTP range of 912 km in the German-market information.
Both cars use one electric motor on each axle, BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system and an 800-volt electrical architecture. The i3 50 xDrive can accept up to 400 kW of DC charging power. BMW says that ten minutes at a suitable high-power charger can add up to 423 km of WLTP range when the infrastructure and battery conditions allow the maximum rate.
Those are official test-cycle figures, not a promise of a fixed real-world distance. BMW lists load, driving style, weather, auxiliary consumption, tyres and battery condition as variables. A driver travelling quickly on a cold motorway will not reproduce the headline laboratory range.
The range will later expand with the BMW i3 M60 xDrive, scheduled for 2027. BMW has not released official WLTP consumption or range data for that version in the launch material because it is still described as a prototype vehicle.
Production is split between Munich and Dingolfing
BMW will build the electric i3 at Plant Munich. The petrol 3 Series will be produced at Plant Dingolfing in Bavaria, with core components for electric and combustion drivetrains coming from BMW’s Steyr operation in Austria. High-voltage batteries will be supplied by the new Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant in Bavaria.
Munich is scheduled to move to all-electric Neue Klasse production in 2027. BMW says the first 3 Series was built there in 1975 and that the model has passed 18 million global sales. The new generation therefore changes the production role of the company’s historic site while continuing the 3 Series story under a different drivetrain mix.
Production of the petrol BMW 320 and M350 xDrive is expected to start at Dingolfing in November 2026. BMW’s UK material places the market launch in 2027, while the US announcement refers to the first quarter of 2027 for the i3, 330, 330 xDrive and M350 xDrive.
BMW USA lists base prices of $49,900 for the 330, $51,900 for the 330 xDrive, $65,900 for the M350 xDrive and $61,500 for the i3 50 xDrive, before treating those figures as Romanian or European prices. BMW has not published the Romanian price list in the launch release, so local customers will need to wait for BMW Group Romania.
Assistance remains SAE Level 2
The new 3 Series will offer SAE Level 2 driver assistance and active safety functions. BMW says Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving up to 130 km/h in 21 countries by the end of 2026. The system remains an assistance feature: the driver must supervise the road and remain responsible for the vehicle.
BMW also says navigation-guided, partially automated urban functions are planned from 2027. Their availability will depend on approval, market equipment and software rollout. The name Neue Klasse does not turn the 3 Series into an autonomous vehicle, and neither does hands-free motorway assistance.
The new generation is therefore defined by a mixed proposition: electric range and fast charging on one side, familiar petrol engines and a six-cylinder M Performance model on the other, all under one digital and visual identity. The practical question for European buyers will be which local versions, prices and software features BMW makes available when orders open.
