Skoda expands its SUV line with the Kamiq. It looks compact at first glance, yet it brings impressive style and size for the class.
The first thing that stands out is the Kamiq’s robust look. At 4.24 metres long, it is 10 cm longer than the SEAT Arona and 13 cm longer than the VW T-Cross—the two models it shares its MQB A0 platform with. In practice it even edges past the VW T-Roc slightly.
Despite relatively compact outer dimensions, the Kamiq offers a surprisingly spacious cabin. Tall passengers around 1.80 m will find enough room to sit comfortably in both rows. Wide door openings make getting in easy, and the relatively high body makes stepping aboard simpler than in the Skoda Scala.
The dashboard and steering-wheel controls have been simplified, which makes them easier to use. Material quality is middling: softer plastic up top, harder and less pleasant lower down. Soft-touch panels on the front doors improve comfort.
Storage space is plentiful. Doors, centre console and armrest all swallow everyday items, and the front door bins fit 1.5-litre bottles.
Boot volume is a useful 400 litres. With the rear seat folded, luggage space grows to nearly 1,400 litres—100 litres more than the Arona or T-Cross offer.
The Kamiq is available with a 1.0 TSI petrol engine paired with a DSG automatic. It produces 115 hp and 200 Nm of torque—enough for normal day-to-day use. Electromechanical power steering is standard and makes urban manoeuvres straightforward.
Skoda Kamiq scored strongly in Euro NCAP tests, earning five stars. It achieved 96% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child protection and 80% for pedestrian protection—the last figure unusually high, which makes the Kamiq one of the safer small SUVs in its segment.
Skoda Kamiq wins you over with what is inside. It is not VW Group’s first take on a small SUV, but its case is easy to grasp.
List pricing for the new Kamiq starts at €18,286, which keeps it within reach for many buyers. Top trims and options can push the figure up considerably.
Although it is a compact vehicle, Skoda Kamiq delivers much of what you expect from a full-size SUV: a roomy interior, a generous boot and efficient powertrains. For anyone who wants a versatile, affordable SUV, it is a strong option.
