BMW will introduce from October 2026 a display that combines navigation, a representation of the car’s surroundings and driver-assistance information in a single 3D view. The BMW Maps with Driver Assistance function will appear on the central screen of cars equipped with BMW Operating System X.
The announcement published by the manufacturer on 14 September does not describe an update available automatically for every BMW with navigation. The function requires Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant, and its introduction will be staged, in certain countries, cities and on certain roads.
What information will appear together
The new interface will show the next route instruction, how the car perceives its surroundings and the assistance functions supporting the driver. The driver will thus be able to follow navigation and the status of assistance in the same visual context.
BMW developed the function in-house, using navigation data and Mapbox mapping technology. The system combines maps with information from the car’s sensors and with artificial intelligence.
Stephan Durach, responsible for digital services, infotainment and Connected Company at BMW Group, says this integration aims to explain more clearly the relationship between the route, perception of the environment and active assistance. That is the manufacturer’s stated objective, not the result of an independent usability test.
Why Operating System X matters
Operating System X is the software foundation of BMW Panoramic iDrive, the display and control architecture presented in 2025. It combines the central screen with BMW Panoramic Vision, the multifunction steering wheel and the optional 3D head-up display.
The new iX3 was the first production model to receive this architecture. In its case, the central screen has a 17.9-inch diagonal, and Panoramic Vision projects information onto a band at the base of the windscreen.
Therefore, “a single 3D display” refers to the integration of Maps information on the central screen. It does not mean that BMW is removing the other display surfaces in the cabin. Nor should it be confused with BMW 3D Head-Up Display: that is a separate element, which projects information into the driver’s field of view.
What to check in Romania
For an owner or buyer in Romania, the presence of BMW Maps navigation is not enough to establish compatibility. The operating-system version, the car’s assistance package and the local availability of the function must be checked.
October indicates the start of the rollout, not a common activation date in all markets. The 3D representation should not be interpreted as authorisation for autonomous driving either: the indications on the screen do not change the driver’s obligations or the limits of the installed assistance system.
