Tesla has set 1 October 2026 for the presentation of the new Roadster, the electric sports car first announced in November 2017. The manufacturer published the message “Go for launch”, an image with the date “10.01” and a countdown timer on the model’s official page. Elon Musk later confirmed that it concerns the unveiling of the new Roadster.
The announcement provides a concrete date for the event, but it should not be confused with the commercial launch. Tesla has not confirmed when series production will start, when customers will receive the first cars, what the final price will be, or whether the car will officially reach Europe.
The distinction matters because the Roadster has accumulated almost nine years of delays. The 2017 prototype was supposed to enter production in 2020, a deadline that was successively replaced by other estimates without Tesla delivering any second-generation example.
What Tesla has confirmed for 1 October
The company has publicly confirmed the presentation date through its own channels and through the countdown on the Roadster page. The message uses the theme of a space launch, but it does not explain the event programme, the car’s configuration or the demonstrations prepared.
According to invitations sent to some people who reserved the car and reports in the American press, the event is expected to take place in the Waco, Texas area. Tesla has not, however, published on its press page all the details regarding access and online streaming. The certain information at this point is the unveiling date: 1 October.
Reuters notes that the demonstration could include a limited version with cold-gas thrusters developed together with SpaceX. That scenario was previously reported by The Information, but it has not been confirmed in the official specifications of a production car.
A new Roadster, not just the 2017 prototype
The event is expected to present a redesigned form of the car. The version shown in 2017 can no longer automatically be considered representative of the model that will be unveiled in October, because battery technology, electronics and Tesla’s range have changed substantially in the meantime.
According to information published by Reuters, the project has evolved from a relatively conventional high-performance electric car toward a hypercar with a carbon-fibre structure. Tesla has not yet presented clear images of the final bodywork, nor updated technical data.
The official page still carries the targets announced for the old prototype: acceleration from 0 to about 97 km/h in 1.9 seconds, a top speed of more than 400 km/h and a range of almost 1,000 km. These figures are not homologated results for the production version and should not be treated as final specifications.
Tesla continues to describe the Roadster as a four-seat car with a removable glass roof that can be stored in the boot. On 1 October we should find out whether these elements have been retained in the new project.
What the SpaceX package is
Elon Musk has spoken since 2018 about an optional SpaceX package with cold-gas thrusters. The idea involves using a pressurised tank and nozzles to help the car with acceleration, braking and changing direction.
Musk has claimed in the past that such a version could accelerate to 97 km/h in less than a second and even lift off the ground for a short time. These are statements by Tesla’s chief executive, not independently demonstrated or road-homologated performances.
A system of this kind raises questions about noise, safety, the space occupied by the tank and the possibility of road approval. That is why the American press talks about two configurations: a Roadster intended for road use and a special variant for demonstrations or the track. Tesla has not officially confirmed this split.
The wording “Go for launch” and the event graphics suggest that SpaceX technology will play an important role in the presentation. Only the October demonstration will show whether the system works on a prototype and how close it is to an application for customers.
Production does not start with the presentation
Elon Musk previously said production could start 12–18 months after the unveiling of the final version. If that estimate remains valid, the first cars would appear at the earliest toward the end of 2027, and a more cautious timetable would push the launch into 2028.
This interval is not a contractual commitment either. The Roadster has already missed the 2020 deadline and several later windows, and Tesla has in the meantime concentrated its resources on volume models, the Cybertruck, the Semi truck, the Cybercab and automated driving systems.
The company no longer displays an updated price for the new configuration and has not published details about the versions that will be orderable in Europe. The sums and reservation conditions communicated in 2017 do not guarantee the price of the redesigned car.
What Tesla needs to confirm at the event
The 1 October presentation should answer the remaining open questions: the final design, the battery type, the number of motors, mass, homologable range, the charging system and the performances that can be repeated in real conditions.
Commercial information is equally important. For the Roadster to move from demonstration to product, Tesla needs to announce the production site and timetable, prices, launch markets and the conditions for customers who deposited money several years ago.
For Romania, the event does not mean the model can be ordered immediately. Tesla operates directly on the local market, but Roadster availability will depend on European homologation, regional allocations and the configuration the company actually turns into a production car.
The date of 1 October is therefore the project’s first firm landmark after a long period of shifting promises. It confirms the presentation, not delivery. The decisive test for Tesla will come after the event: turning the new Roadster into a car that is produced and handed over to customers.
