BMW’s Regensburg plant has produced its nine-millionth car since operations began in 1986. The anniversary example is a BMW iX1 painted in Velvet Orchid II Metallic, specified through the BMW Individual programme and destined for a customer in Sweden.

BMW reached this milestone in the plant’s 40th year of operation. Series production in Regensburg began in 1986 with the BMW 3 Series E30, and the factory later built models such as the 1 Series and Z4.
The plant currently manufactures the BMW X1 and BMW X2 in petrol or diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. All powertrain types are assembled on the same line, which allows the mix of versions to be adjusted according to demand in the markets where the cars are delivered.
More than 356,000 cars produced in 2025
BMW’s Regensburg plant built 356,901 cars in 2025, the highest annual volume in its history. BMW says more than 150,000 of the vehicles produced last year were electrified, a category that includes both fully electric cars and plug-in hybrid models.
The factory runs three shifts, and a car leaves the assembly line every 57 seconds. Daily output is more than 1,400 vehicles, delivered to customers in several markets.
About 9,000 employees in Regensburg and Wackersdorf
BMW Group has about 9,000 employees at the Regensburg and Wackersdorf sites, including around 380 people in vocational training programmes. BMW presents the Regensburg plant as the group’s largest car factory in Europe by production volume.
Data published by BMW show the plant’s path from initial 3 Series production to the current flexible manufacture of the X1 and X2. The nine-million figure includes all cars produced in Regensburg since operations started in 1986.
