BMW M2 xDrive is confirmed in Romania; a new version remains a rumour

BMW has officially announced the M2 with M xDrive, the compact M coupé’s first all-wheel-drive version. The release for Romania puts the launch at the end of summer 2026. Production began in August 2026, at the BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosí (Mexico).

A short post on the BimmerPost forum, picked up by BMWBlog on 13 August 2026, says another variant of the G87 generation is still to come. BMW has not confirmed the name, engine, gearbox, drivetrain or date. Speculation about a CS with a manual, a CS with xDrive or an M2 CSL remains press assumption, not a plan published by the brand.

What is confirmed: M2 xDrive

According to BMW, the engine remains the 3.0-litre inline six, with 353 kW / 480 hp. Power goes through an eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. A manual gearbox is not announced on xDrive.

The M xDrive system uses a multi-disc clutch in the transfer case. In ordinary driving, torque goes to the rear; the front axle joins only when the rear wheels can no longer put the power down. There is also an M active differential. From the M Setup menu, 2WD can be selected, with DSC off, in which case torque stays at the rear only.

Standard wheels are 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear. Brakes are M Compound (six pistons at the front). Track tyres are optional.

The engine introduces BMW M Ignite, pre-chamber combustion, which the brand says it will roll out gradually on all M inline-six engines from mid-2026. BMW says it reduces consumption at high loads and helps meet EU7. It has not published a consumption comparison versus the M2 without M Ignite.

Alexander Karajlovic, vice president of development at BMW M GmbH, describes xDrive as an expansion of the range, not a replacement. The release still refers to “the exclusively rear-wheel-drive model”, so the rear-drive variant remains on offer.

The most important markets announced for xDrive are the USA, Germany and China. Romania is not on that short list, but the local release exists, with a launch still at the end of summer 2026. That text does not include a price for Romania.

What already exists: M2 CS

The limited-edition M2 CS was announced for Romania with a launch at the end of summer 2025. Official figures: 390 kW / 530 hp, 650 Nm, rear drive, again an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. 0–100 km/h in 3.8 s, top speed 302 km/h (M Driver’s package, standard on CS). Mass is about 30 kg lower than the standard M2. The price communicated for Romania: €90,300 excluding VAT, €107,457 including VAT.

The CS has no manual gearbox. That is a difference from the M3 CS Handschalter, confirmed by BMW in May 2026 only for the USA and Canada, with a six-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. The analogy stops there: Handschalter does not announce an equivalent M2.

In 2025, BMW M GmbH said the M2 Coupé was its best-selling high-performance model.

What remains rumour

BMWBlog cites BimmerPost user ynguldyn, who has a long record of internal information about future BMW models. The reported wording is short: there will be one more version of the G87 M2. That is all.

From there, journalists have drawn scenarios, without confirmation from BMW:

  • a CS with a manual, on the lines of the M3 CS Handschalter;
  • a CS with M xDrive, like the M3 CS, M4 CS and M3 CS Touring;
  • a factory package from M Performance accessories;
  • an M2 CSL, a lighter variant, analogous to the M4 CSL.

None of these names appears in a current release. BMW has also not published a date until which it would produce the G87; the July 2029 term circulated on BimmerPost remains forum information, not an official calendar.

Until an announcement from Munich, the confirmed range for a buyer remains the rear-wheel-drive M2, the M2 CS (limited series) and the M2 xDrive, from summer 2026.

What it means for Romania

Local dealers have the xDrive release, so the model enters the portfolio in the same launch window. With no price in the release, the offer has to be asked at a dealership. The CS had a list: €107,457 including VAT, at the 2025 announcement.

The cars are built in Mexico. The Rabla 2026 programme funds vehicles produced in the EU, EEA, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Turkey or Morocco; Mexican origin separately excludes eligibility by country of manufacture, regardless of engine.

On the used market, BMW M2 listings are the current or previous generation, not a CS/CSL that does not exist. A new xDrive is distinguished from a rear-drive M2 by the automatic gearbox, the drivetrain and, after delivery, by the type-approval documents, not by a visible body kit.
