BYD presented the ETT 44 electric tractor unit at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, a model aimed at long-haul work in Europe. The variant with the largest battery has a capacity of 651 kWh and a claimed range of up to 600 km, and the company says the vehicle will reach European roads in the coming months.

Two LFP batteries and charging of up to 1.5 MW
The ETT 44 uses LFP batteries from the BYD Blade family, in two configurations: 434 kWh and 651 kWh. For these, the manufacturer quotes ranges of 400 km and 600 km respectively. The figures are those communicated by BYD, so range in service will depend on payload, speed, route, temperature and driving style.
The large-battery version can charge at up to 1,500 kW via the MCS standard, while the base variant is rated at 950 kW. According to BYD, both can go from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes at a compatible station. That claim depends, however, on the expansion of MCS infrastructure, which remains limited in Europe.
Up to 1,006 hp for heavy haulage
The 4x2 tractor unit is fitted with a single 750 kW electric motor, equivalent to about 1,006 hp. BYD quotes a kerb weight of between 10,950 and 11,140 kg and a gross combination mass of up to 44 tonnes in the configuration approved for Europe.
The model has a high-roof sleeper cab, air suspension, a digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch central screen and cameras that replace the side mirrors. The assistance package includes ADAS systems, without BYD having detailed the standard equipment for each market.
Tougher competition among electric trucks
The arrival of the ETT 44 puts BYD in direct competition with models such as the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, MAN eTGX, Scania 45 R Electric, DAF XF Electric and Tesla Semi. For fleet operators, range is not the only criterion: the service network, access to high-power chargers, downtime and the battery warranty will shape the real cost of operation.
BYD says it offers a 10-year or 1.2 million km warranty on the battery. The price of the ETT 44 has not been announced. Nor has a separate timetable for entry into the Romanian market been communicated.
