Geely has started the international rollout of the Monjaro EM-i, a D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV. The model launched first in Egypt, with the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Kazakhstan named as the next markets before a wider European expansion. Geely describes it as the brand’s first global D-SUV using its EM-i Super Hybrid system.

What the Monjaro EM-i is

The Monjaro EM-i combines a 1.5TD petrol engine designed for hybrid applications with an electric drive system. The initial Egyptian range includes three versions: the front-wheel-drive Pro and Max, plus the all-wheel-drive Ultra. Geely has not published one universal specification sheet for every market, so equipment, homologation figures and availability may change from country to country.

Geely says the front-wheel-drive versions can return fuel consumption as low as 5.4 litres/100 km with the battery at a low state of charge. This is a manufacturer figure, not an independent test result and not necessarily a WLTP value for Europe. The rollout announcement does not specify the battery capacity or the certified electric range for each version. Those details will matter to buyers comparing the Monjaro with other plug-in hybrid SUVs.

Dimensions and cabin space

The Monjaro EM-i measures about 4.8 metres in length and has a 2,845mm wheelbase. Geely links those dimensions to passenger room and quotes 992mm of front headroom, 130mm of second-row knee room and 1,860mm of total passenger space on its global model page. These are official figures, not Carboratory measurements.

Boot capacity is listed at 633 litres, increasing to 1,532 litres with the second row folded. Geely also says that folding the front passenger seat creates space for items up to 2.8 metres long. The manufacturer’s page does not describe every measurement condition, so the figures should be read as model information rather than a direct comparison with independently measured luggage volumes.

The cabin uses a 15.4-inch central touchscreen and a 25.6-inch head-up display, according to Geely. The infotainment platform is called Flyme Auto, while the audio system is branded Flyme Sound. Geely also describes layered seating, with 11 layers in the front seats and eight in the second row, including a 15mm high-density foam layer. The specification is intended to explain the construction, not to certify a particular comfort level in a road test.

Powertrain and performance

The Ultra version uses Geely’s e-AWD Intelligent Electric AWD system. In the company’s description of the Sahara capability programme, torque distribution can vary from 100:0, with all torque sent to the front axle, to a 50:50 split between the two axles. The same release quotes up to 250kW and 667Nm for the EM-i Super Hybrid system, with 0–100km/h acceleration in 5.83 seconds for the Ultra.

Geely also quotes a 33-metre braking distance from 100km/h to a stop and a 79km/h result in a moose test. These results come from the manufacturer’s own testing programme and are not independent certification or a Carboratory test. Buyers in Europe will need the specification of the locally homologated version before using the numbers for a purchase comparison.

The Continuous Damping Control suspension can adjust damping up to 50 times per second, with a claimed response time of 20 milliseconds. The global model page lists Comfort, Standard and Sport modes. These descriptions indicate the hardware and software claims made by Geely; they do not establish how the vehicle compares with rival SUVs on European roads.

Safety and equipment

Geely says the body structure uses high-strength steel throughout and lists six standard airbags in the Egyptian launch communication. The Monjaro EM-i also has a 540-degree panoramic view system with a transparent-chassis visualisation on the central display. The intended use is to help drivers judge tight parking spaces, curbs and obstacles that are difficult to see from the driver’s seat.

The model is based on Geely’s GEA Evo architecture and uses the GEEA 3.0 electronic architecture. The company also lists driver-assistance functions, although the exact combination is not presented identically for every version and market. A vehicle-to-load function can deliver up to 6.6kW, with 12V outlets in the front area and boot.

The official model page also mentions an opening panoramic sunroof with a full blackout shade, a 175-LED full-width rear light and an integrated spare-wheel solution. These features are part of Geely’s global presentation and may be linked to specific versions. The local equipment list remains the decisive document for any European order.

The Sahara programme and European debut

In September 2026, Geely announced that a production Monjaro EM-i had set a Guinness World Records title for the fastest crossing of Egypt’s Black and White Desert by a plug-in hybrid production SUV. The continuous route measured 188.6 kilometres and included gravel, ruts, hard-rock sections and changing levels of grip. The event also included five capability challenges covering handling, steep climbs, cross-axle recovery, rough-road comfort and acceleration with a low battery state of charge.

The record was announced by Geely as part of a company-organised programme. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every vehicle will deliver the same result on every type of terrain, nor as a substitute for an independent durability test.

Geely has announced a European debut for the Monjaro EM-i at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. The sources consulted do not provide a Romanian price, an order-opening date for Romania, a European battery specification or a final local equipment structure.

What European buyers still need to know

The Monjaro EM-i combines a plug-in hybrid system, two drive layouts and a large cabin with technology-focused equipment. The current information is still largely based on Geely’s global product page and launch releases. A useful European comparison will require the battery capacity, WLTP electric range, WLTP fuel consumption, kerb weight, charging data, towing limit, warranty and final price.

It is therefore accurate to describe the Monjaro EM-i as a global D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV entering a staged rollout. It is not yet possible to treat it as a fully specified Romanian-market product. Geely has confirmed the direction of its European expansion, while the commercial details for individual countries remain to be announced.
