Stellantis is in talks with Huawei and Chinese manufacturer JAC Group about possible long-term industrial cooperation involving Maserati. The negotiations were reported by Reuters, based on information from two people familiar with the matter. No contract has been announced, and the three companies have not publicly presented a model, a plant or a firm timetable.
The subject should be kept separate from the idea of a sale of the Italian brand. Available information describes a possible partnership for development and production, not a takeover of Maserati by Huawei or JAC.
What is being negotiated among Stellantis, Huawei and JAC
According to Reuters reporting, the talks concern lasting industrial collaboration. Such an agreement could give Maserati faster access to technology, software and development capacity from China, at a time when the brand is trying to rebuild sales and its product range.
Earlier reports in the Chinese press sketched a possible split of responsibilities:
- Huawei would contribute to product definition and digital technologies;
- JAC would take part in research, development and production;
- Maserati would be responsible for design and brand identity.
That formula has not been confirmed officially. CnEVPost reported in May that negotiations had not reached the signing of a commercial agreement, even if preparatory work had already begun.
Maextro in China, Maserati on export markets?
One of the options circulating assumes the resulting car would be sold in China under the Maextro brand, developed by Huawei together with JAC, and under the Maserati badge on other markets. The first shared product would be aimed at the end of 2027.
Those elements also come from sources close to the talks. There are still no official images, technical specifications or confirmation that the car will reach Europe. It is also unknown whether the project would be fully electric, a plug-in hybrid or an electric car with a range extender.
Huawei’s HIMA commercial and technology platform brings together several collaborations with Chinese manufacturers. In those projects, the technology company can supply software, driver-assistance systems, cabin components and contributions to product definition, while the automotive partner handles type approval and manufacturing. Any Maserati programme would still have to be adapted to the safety, cybersecurity and data-protection requirements of each market where it would be sold.
Why Stellantis is looking for a partner for Maserati
Maserati is going through a difficult period. According to Reuters, the brand delivered fewer than 8,000 cars in 2025 and recorded an adjusted operating loss of €198 million. The small sales volume makes it expensive to develop dedicated platforms, batteries and digital systems from scratch.
Stellantis has included production partnerships among the tools of its long-term strategy. Antonio Filosa, the group’s chief executive, said such collaborations could also support activity at the Italian plants in Cassino and Modena. The statement does not, however, specify which components or models would go to each factory if talks with Huawei and JAC lead to a deal.
In February 2026, asked directly whether Maserati would remain in the group, Filosa referred investors to the company’s strategy presentation, without announcing a separation. The full answer appears in the Stellantis 2025 results transcript.
