Polestar Formula 2030 previews the next Polestar 2 and the future Polestar 7 SUV
Polestar has shown the first image of the Formula 2030 concept, the car through which it is preparing the look of its future electric models. The prototype is not a direct replacement for a model now on sale, but a design study from which elements will be taken for the next Polestar 2 generation and for the compact Polestar 7 SUV.
The full presentation is scheduled for October 2026 at the Ascari circuit in Spain. Until then, the manufacturer has published only the front image and a few details about the concept’s role. There is still no information on battery, power, range, dimensions or a possible Formula 2030 production version.
A new face, without a break from current models
The image shows a low, wide body, with the front wheels visibly cambered and a bonnet crossed by an aerodynamic channel. The daytime running lights keep the “Dual Blade” motif used by Polestar, but the two light blades now have larger proportions and are separated by a narrow slit.
Philipp Römers, Polestar’s design director, describes the change as an evolution, not a rupture from current cars. Formula 2030 keeps the headlamp signature so that future models remain easy to recognise, but introduces more curved surfaces and a front end with a more sporting presence.
Römers has led the design department since 2025, after Max Missoni left for BMW. Formula 2030 is the first project created from scratch under his direction, and its appearance also explains the positioning Polestar is seeking relative to Volvo: electric cars with a stronger emphasis on performance, without aggressive styling for its own sake.
The new Polestar 2 is scheduled for 2027
The first production model expected to use ideas from Formula 2030 is the successor to Polestar 2, scheduled for launch in 2027. The current Polestar 2 entered production in 2020 and has been updated in several stages, including a shift of some versions from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive.
Polestar has not confirmed the body style, platform, powertrains or range of the new generation. The concept does indicate that the front end will keep the separate headlamps and the active or passive aerodynamic elements that have become recognisable on Polestar 3 and Polestar 4.
A piece published by Motor1 notes that the image looks more like a sports car than a traditional saloon. That remains an interpretation of the prototype; Polestar has confirmed only that certain design details will reach the future Polestar 2.
Polestar 7 will be a compact SUV launched in 2028
The second model previewed by Formula 2030 is Polestar 7, a compact electric SUV planned for 2028. It is expected to occupy the highest-volume segment in the brand’s range and to take on the role of entry model after launch.
The company has not yet published the dimensions or specifications of Polestar 7. Formula 2030 should also not be read as a faithful reproduction of the future SUV: the proportions of a sporting concept can be used to present headlamps, surfaces and materials, without indicating the height or interior space of the production car.
According to the Polestar statement distributed on 7 September, the prototype will also show the direction of future cabin interfaces, as well as new uses of materials. The interior does not appear in the first photograph, and the manufacturer has not described the controls, screens or materials used.
Restricted showing in Gothenburg, public debut at Ascari
Before the press premiere, Formula 2030 will be shown to investors, dealers and a group of customers at The Cube, Polestar’s headquarters in Gothenburg. Choosing a commercial audience indicates that the prototype is also part of the company’s plan for the next four years, not only an exercise for motor shows.
Polestar links Formula 2030 to the goal of continuing growth and reaching profitability. The brand reported 30,423 cars sold in the first half of 2026, 0.4% more than in the same period of 2025. The commercial network grew by 39% in a year, according to the company’s published financial results.
The new Polestar 2 and Polestar 7 must therefore bring higher volumes than the niche Polestar 5 and the future Polestar 6 roadster. In October, Formula 2030 will show how much of the radical look of the first image can be adapted to cars intended for daily use.
