A prototype of the forthcoming electric Porsche 718 Boxster has returned to the Nürburgring. The car photographed in September 2026 carries less camouflage than examples seen earlier, and the tests confirm that development of the roadster continues after a period in which the project’s future was in doubt.
Images published by Auto Express show a car close to production shape, with a low front end, rectangular headlights and vertical flaps in the air intakes. Those details can still change before launch, because the vehicle remains a test prototype.
The electric 718 has not been cancelled
Michael Leiters, Porsche’s chief executive since January 2026, confirmed in August that the brand will build the new electric 718. The statement followed reports that the project might have been stopped because of costs and weaker demand for expensive electric cars.
Porsche has not, however, communicated an official presentation or production timetable. A 2027 launch is mentioned by the motoring press, but it remains an estimate until the manufacturer announces one.
Production of the current-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman with combustion engines ended at the end of October 2025. According to Porsche’s annual report, 15,856 Boxster and Cayman examples were built in 2025, compared with 23,790 in 2024.
The battery is expected to sit behind the seats
The architecture of the future electric 718 differs from the solution used by most electric cars. Porsche has previously indicated that a pack placed entirely under the floor does not allow the low driving position and centre of gravity wanted for a two-seat sports car.
The solution being tested for the new generation groups cells in the central area of the car, behind the occupants, following the principle shown on the Mission R concept. The layout aims to keep the mass distribution typical of a mid-engined model and to avoid raising the cabin.
The prototype seen on the circuit has wheels with aerodynamic elements, masked side intakes and a fabric roof. A digital instrument cluster and a central screen are expected inside, but Porsche has not presented the production cabin.
Power, battery and range are not confirmed
The manufacturer has not announced battery capacity, motor output, WLTP range or peak charging speed. Information about an 800 V electrical system, single- or dual-motor versions and a range of more than 480 km comes from older statements and press estimates, not from a final technical sheet.
The same caution applies to future combustion-engined versions. Porsche said in 2025 that the top variants of the 718 range would keep an internal-combustion engine, but it has not confirmed which power unit they will use, when they will appear, or whether they will have hybrid technology.
For now, the Nürburgring photographs show only that the electric Boxster has moved into an advanced testing stage. Prices and availability in Romania can be discussed only after the official presentation and publication of the European range.
