Almost 3 million Tesla cars recalled in China over emergency door opening
Tesla will remedy 2,975,910 cars in China after the market regulator found that the mechanical emergency door-opening system can be hard to identify and use. The campaign covers Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X examples, produced locally or imported.
The issue becomes important in a serious accident if the low-voltage electrical system no longer works. In that situation, occupants must be able to find the mechanical control quickly, and emergency crews must have the easiest possible access to the cabin.
The recall is part of a broader action by Chinese authorities covering more than four million cars produced by nine companies. The brands involved also include Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Geely and Xpeng.
Which Tesla models are included
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, known as SAMR, published two Tesla campaigns starting on 25 September 2026:
- 973,156 China-built Model 3 cars produced between 4 March 2019 and 29 April 2026;
- 1,956,713 China-built Model Y cars produced between 16 November 2020 and 30 April 2026;
- 35,590 imported Model 3 examples, built between 22 August 2018 and 20 November 2019;
- 8,328 imported Model X examples, built between 27 October 2022 and 13 February 2026;
- 2,123 imported Model S examples, built between 18 January 2023 and 10 February 2026.
The list refers to cars sold in China and does not automatically mean that all vehicles from the same production windows, sold in Romania or other European countries, are part of the campaign. Owners must check the chassis number through the official Tesla channel for the market on which the car was delivered.
The remedy does not require replacing every handle
The Chinese authority is not requiring Tesla to change the complete mechanism of every door. The company will apply free warning markings that make the interior mechanical emergency handle easier to recognise. Cars that already have these markings will not receive others.
Tesla will also install a remote software update for window control. This adds a strategy of lowering the windows after a crash, intended to reduce the risk that passengers or rescuers are left without a rapid path of access.
The action is classified officially as a recall even if part of the remedy is done by OTA update and does not require a service visit. The term describes the manufacturer’s obligation to correct a safety risk free of charge, not necessarily the replacement of a part in a workshop.
Hidden handles and emergency opening are two different problems
Headlines about this campaign can create the impression that all of the almost three million cars are being recalled solely because they have flush or retractable exterior handles. The SAMR document, however, points to a more precise problem: the interior mechanical emergency control is a colour close to that of the trim and can be difficult to see or operate.
Flush exterior handles are part of the same safety discussion, but they are regulated separately. They are valued for appearance and for reducing aerodynamic drag, but they can become hard to use if the electric mechanism no longer has power, is damaged in an impact or is blocked by ice.
Inside, electric buttons can be convenient in normal use, but a mechanical backup control must be visible, intuitive and accessible even to a passenger who does not know the car.
China introduces mandatory rules from 2027
The Chinese standard GB 48001-2026 on car-handle safety takes effect on 1 January 2027. It requires a mechanical opening function both outside and inside, except for the tailgate, and sets requirements for the position and identification of the controls.
For new models, manufacturers must comply with the rules from the date they take effect. Cars that have already received type approval benefit from a transition period until 1 January 2029.
The measure does not affect Tesla alone. Flush body-level handles have become common on Chinese electric cars, but they also appear on models from some European brands. As China is the world’s largest car market, the new standard can influence the design of cars developed for several regions, even if the European Union does not adopt an identical rule.
What an owner in Romania needs to know
The campaign announced by SAMR is one for the Chinese market. A Tesla owner in Romania should not assume that their car is recalled just because it belongs to the same model family.
It is useful, however, for every occupant to know where the mechanical emergency release is. Position and operation differ by model, year of manufacture and door, and the car’s handbook should be consulted before a critical situation arises.
The recall shows a limit of fully electronic controls: elegance and aerodynamics cannot replace a mechanical solution that is easy to find when the car’s electrical supply has been interrupted.
