The Volvo XC40 receives a substantial update for 2027, with redesigned body parts, a new infotainment system and more capable sensors for assistance functions. The changes will also be applied to the electric EX40 and EC40, which share the same technical base.
The XC40 was launched in 2017, and this intervention extends its career in a segment where it competes with the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. Volvo is not changing the model’s architecture or the powertrain range announced for the combustion version.
The front end has been almost completely reworked
The bonnet, grille, headlamps and front bumper have been redesigned. The grille is now lower and wider, and its edges reach the new Matrix LED headlamps. The “Thor’s Hammer” light signature is split into two segments and has sharper lines than on the current model.
The changes are more substantial than the discreet facelift introduced in 2022. Volvo designer Alain Snoodijk told Auto Express that the team started from a blank sheet for the front and rear, aiming for a balance between a solid appearance and a more athletic silhouette.
At the rear there are narrower vertical light clusters with smoked lenses, a simplified bumper and a tailgate with more defined edges. The wheel range also includes a new 20-inch design with three pairs of spokes.

The EX40 and EC40 receive the same headlamps and the same body changes. The visible difference remains the closed front panel typical of electric cars, instead of the classic grille on the mild-hybrid XC40.
11.2-inch screen and Google Gemini assistant
Inside, the old central display is replaced by an 11.2-inch touchscreen, mounted in a floating style. It runs the latest version of Volvo’s Google-based interface and is intended to give access to the main functions with fewer taps.
The system includes the Google Gemini artificial-intelligence assistant, which can understand conversational phrasing, help plan a route and search for stops or points of interest. Availability of some services may vary by market and associated subscriptions.
The dashboard receives indirect ambient lighting, and the materials list includes Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery and Brown Ash trim. The centre console uses less glossy black plastic and offers extra space next to the wireless charger.

New sensors and a door-opening warning
Volvo has updated the cameras, radars, computing components and software of the three models. Among the new functions is a door-opening warning: the system alerts occupants if a car, cyclist or pedestrian is approaching from behind.
The manufacturer has not yet published the full list of standard and optional functions for each market. Exact equipment for cars destined for Romania will therefore be confirmed only when the final configurator appears.
XC40 powertrains remain mild-hybrid
For the XC40, the offer continues with petrol engines assisted by a mild-hybrid system and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Volvo Cars Romania currently lists two variants for model year 2027:
- B3 with 163 hp, front-wheel drive, WLTP consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and 0–100 km/h in 8.6 seconds;
- B4 with 197 hp, front-wheel drive, WLTP consumption of 6.6 l/100 km and 0–100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.
Prices shown in Romania on 10 September 2026 are €45,800 for the B3 and €51,200 for the B4. The local page does not, however, specify whether every car that can be ordered now already has all of the aesthetic changes presented with the facelift.
EX40 reaches 573 km of range in the Romanian configuration
The electric powertrains are not being replaced. Volvo EX40 specifications for Romania indicate WLTP ranges of up to 477 km for Single Motor, 573 km for Single Motor Extended Range and 534 km for Twin Motor. Power outputs are 238 hp, 252 hp and 408 hp respectively.
Figures published by Auto Express for the updated range reach about 570 km for the EX40 and 578 km for the EC40, with differences determined by version and each market’s homologation. Final values for facelift models sold in Romania may differ.
The XC40 facelift is due to go on sale in the first markets by the end of 2026. Volvo has not separately communicated the start of deliveries in Romania or a new price list dedicated explicitly to the facelift.
