The BMW X4 mixes an athletic coupé silhouette with SUV height. We review design, specifications, interior and performance of the X4 20d xDrive.

Exterior design is sporty and distinctive. Large kidney grilles dominate the front but fit the proportions. Flowing body lines and big alloy wheels reinforce the look; slim rear lights give an unusual BMW rear graphic. Black plastic around the exhaust outlets is not the prettiest detail but does little harm overall.

Prices start at €55,000. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, cruise control and front and rear parking sensors, plus stability control, traction control and hill-start assist. The 10-inch colour infotainment screen requires M Sport, which also brings larger wheels and a sport body kit. Higher trims unlock the most desirable options.

Euro NCAP has not tested the X4 independently; BMW cites a five-star rating based on the related X3.

The cabin echoes Series 5 and Series 7 quality. Controls are intuitive and within easy reach. A generous central bin suits phones and keys, with more space under the armrest. Instruments are clear.

Rear legroom is adequate, but the sloping roof limits headroom. Boot volume is 525 litres, expanding to 1,430 litres with the 40:20:40 split rear seats folded.

Our X4 20d test car uses a 2.0-litre turbo diesel rated at 190 hp and 400 Nm. BMW quotes 0–100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 132 km/h.

Official combined consumption is 5.6 l/100 km with 142 g/km CO₂—the best figures in the X4 engine line-up because the 20d is the most economical option.

The range-topping M40i reaches 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 km/h, with combined consumption of 7.5 l/100 km.

On the road the X4 feels more dynamic than many rivals in the segment. Steering is well weighted and body control is confident in bends, yet suspension still absorbs most bumps. The diesel is refined and strong enough for daily use, with good cabin isolation. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and xDrive adds grip on wet surfaces.

The X4 is a distinctive SUV choice: attractive design and engaging driving manners, with a refined efficient diesel and a high-quality interior. Rear space trails some rivals, and prices sit above a conventional SUV, but it suits buyers who want something different in a crowded segment.
